Broome

We got to Broome bright and early on September 13th, having taken the overnight bus from Kununurra. After checking into the hostel, we took a walk around the town. Broome is a very nice town, small but upscale. It is famous for being the main pearling centre of Australia, especially during the early nineteenth century. That first night we decided to walk down to Cable Beach, one of the most famous beaches on the West Coast. The beach is beautiful, pristine white sand and sparkling turquoise water. We stumbled upon on Asian festival of some kind that happened to be going on beside the beach. We got dinner and watched some entertainment which included dancing and singing, before heading back to the hostel.

The next day, we explored the town further and spent some time in Chinatown. This area included historical information about the lives of various populations, particularly the Japanese, who immigrated to Broome to work in the pearling industry. That night we went on a sunset camel ride on Cable Beach! This was awesome, and very relaxing.

Tuesday, we decided to continue with our long-standing tradition of going to the cinema by going to see “UP”. This movie was so cute! We both really enjoyed it, especially the very beginning of the film. After that, we walked to the other beach in Broome called Town Beach and then finished the day be relaxing at the hostel.

Wednesday was our last day in Broome. We spent most of that day relaxing at the hostel and shopping in Chinatown.

Beach
It was a bit of a hike, but we made it to the beach.

There's just so much beach. Usually it looks quite deserted.

Festival
There was an asian festival going on. Although other than a Chinese dragon dance, there didn't seem to be too much that was asian about it.

McDonalds
I don't know if we'll be able to go back to the less posh McDonalds back home.

Chinatown
The shopping area is called Chinatown because it was the area where the Japanese and other people of asian descent lived (pearlers). Go figure.

We made sure to show up early so we could soak up a little sun.

Hill and I originally picked this camel. She nicknamed him "Lumpy". Of course when we were assigned another camel, she nicknamed her "Lumpy" as well.

Town
On one of our last days we went down to the south end of town. As usual, we kept our map close at hand; otherwise we'd end up very lost.

Town beach was a much smaller beach. More of a local place to hang out.

The tide was out, making it a little trickier to launch boats.
