Driving the Cook City Highway

The Cook City Highway runs from Red Lodge, MT to Yellowstone National Park. It is a breath taking drive! It is not for the faint of heart though. The drop offs on one side with rock wall on the other has unnerved a few. This is not a fast drive. Do not take this as a short cut to Yellowstone - it won't happen that way. The drive is a slow one and again breath taking is all I can say about it.

I had to stop and look over the side and take a shot looking down. This shot is taken from the guard rail. Yes it is straight down and this is maybe only half way up. A couple of years ago my folks went on their motorcycles with another couple over the highway. The one woman on the other bike actually did have problems with the heights and they were concerned as to whether she was going to make it through the ride.

At the top I was driving into the clouds on a hot summer day. The top in interesting to me. Every time I see it I can't but think about the movie "Horse Whisperer". They were driving the horse out to the Bozeman area and on the way they stopped at the battle field located south of Billings. Then the next scene they are driving over the Cook City Highway. Wait!!! they run parallel to each other. LOL That does not compute. But it makes for great shots.

A couple of years ago there was a rock/snow slide on this highway. It took out a good part of the highway and it is now under construction and will be for sometime. At least there are pretty sights along the way as you have to stop.
