My first week in Buenos Aires and a trip to Uruguay

It is already more than a week since I have arrived in Buenos Aires and I really enjoy my time here, even tough it is winter and unusual cold, brrr.....
As I started right away with my Spanish lessons there was not much of sightseeing done so far. Still, I walk by some famouse places and roads every day on the way to my school, such as the Obelisco, Avenida de Mayo, Casa Rosada and Calle Florida. The Microcentro (kind of downtown as it is called here) is quite impressive with its old european buildings and the busy streets. On the weekend I visited the famouse cemetry in Ricoleta, kind of spooky also during the sunny day. My biggest concern was to get lost and not find the way out in time before they close and have to spend the night there..... Luckily I made it out in time and went down to the newer area of Buenos Aires, Porto Madero, the old port now a modern area with lots of cafes and restaurants.
On Saturday I met with some friends from school and we made the passage to Colonia, Uruguay. This sleepy little town wakes up in summer to be one of the hot spots for Portenos (this is how they call the people from Buenos Aires) for beach trips. I could really imagine how bustling it will get in summer, but now it was just a nearly empty cold little place. Still we had a look at the old buildings, the dirty Rio and had a nice lunch before heading back to Argentina again. Worthwile a trip but the place has been discovered within a few hours.
There are 2 more weeks of learning Spanish and enjoying the nightlife of BsAs before I will start my volunteer project.

Hey Priska, I think it is absolutely great what u r doing!For how long will you be traveling? What is your volunteer project about? Me, still in HK... not sure for how long! Weather... very hot;-) cheers
