After a very very long journey, I safely made it to Australia and have just spent my first week in Perth. I couldn't have asked for a better journey here, yet I don't want to have to repeat it in a hurry! I think I struggled with not really talking for the best part of 22 hours!
So far the weather here has been beautiful considering that it is winter. I spent my first full day getting my bearings around Perth and had lunch sitting outside on the waterfront. Perth is a lot smaller than I had imagined, and easy to walk around the main shopping and business district. The area along the waterfront is very pretty; lots of greenery with the city skyline as the backdrop.
We did a day trip to Fremantle last week. On the way we took a boat along the Swan river which winds its way from Perth to Fremantle docks. The scenery along the way was great, with lots of million dollar properties lining the waters edge, and at one point dolphins were swimming close to the boat. The Hoff also made an appearance on the trip!
At Fremantle there is an
abundance of fish and chip restaurants. We stopped for lunch at one we're Patsy and I shared a massive platter of fish, squid, scallops, mussells and tiger prawns. After lunch we wandered around the markets. I was expecting them to be full of fresh fish, fruit and veg stalls similar to Borough market, however they were nothing like that and instead sold lots of touristy gifts and arts and crafts.
To end our trip in Fremantle we decided to visit the prison. British convicts were sent here in the 1800's, but the prison didn't close until 1991. Considering that the prison closed less than 20 years ago it was in a very poor state and it almost made you feel sorry for the prisoners that had to stay there!
Today has been spent on a hop on / hop off bus seeing the sights of the city. The trip ended in King's Park, which is incredible. It sits on a hill over looking Perth and is beautiful. The grounds and gardens are kept in beautiful condition, and there are so many viewing platforms within the park which offer amazing views of the city and the Swan river. At
some point during my stay I will go back and spend the day in King's Park as there is so much to see.
Aside from all the touristy sight seeing we've been doing, I have also been introduced to the wonder that is Australian television. Most of the programmes are american, but if you think we have bad adverts in the UK, you should try watching Australian TV; I'll keep my NAH and Experian!
On that note, I'm off to put my feet up with a cup of tetley and watch the latest installment of "The Bold and The Beautiful"!!!!
