I had a fairly open mind about what we might experience on this trip, knowing that there were too many variables. Our scripture to ponder on the day of assault on St.Louis, was Joseph's journey into slavery (Gen. 37). The question I wondered about as I finished my pondering and prayer time was: "When have I been on a coerced journey like Joseph's and how did I react? I came up with a few vague ideas, but nothing I was very satisfied with. I needn't have worried: a sample was about to slap us in the face.

We got lost at least once in the morning, but had a great time on the Chain of Rocks Bridge which crosses the Mississippi on an angled bed of limestone and therefore actually has a turn built into the roadbed and bridge structure. We should have recognized the early moments of being lost as foreshadowing. But we had a great time on the bridge, which was used for old Route 66. It has been turned into a bicycle and walking bridge and we spent a lovely time making the two mile round trip walk, enjoying the view and breeze.

It was when we got back on the road that we felt like we were in a "coerced journey". After two hours of stopping, starting, rereading the map for the tenth time, asking for directions repeatedly, and getting a little short with each other as well as having some interesting adventures in some unsafe parts of the city, we threw up our metaphorical "traveling hands", found our way to the interstate, and got across MO as quickly as possible. After a long ride ending in a good motel and a good meal, we collapsed in the cool of our room. Steve then found a paragraph in his Route 66 guide that neither of us had seen. It advised Rt. 66 travelers to stick to the interstate in MO!! Rt. 66 is too chopped up in that state and has been realigned too many times to be an enjoyable and easy to follow ride. Look what happens when a person doesn't read every last direction...we were wiser and more fatigued. But grateful to be in a chilled room and not a desert cistern! Blessings, Grace
