After a good nights sleep (the room had much needed air conditioning) although a bit short , we woke up at 5am ready for watching sunrise. Again we take the Uluru Express bus to the car park to watch sunrise at 6.54 am. Along with about 200 other visitors we wait and get our positions ready for the sun to light up this famous rock.

We were provided with a hot drink and biscuits while we waited and started taking pictures of the sunrise in front of Ayers Rock and the rock it self as the colour got more red by the minute. The sky was perfectly clear and blue as the sun rose and the shadows were quite amazing. Uluru is 3.6km long and 348 metres high and is sacred in Anangu law.

At 7am we were taken to the base of the rock to do a climb or guided walk, of course Oli decided to do the climb. We set off up the steep mountain, after 10 minutes the climb started to get steeper and it was very strenuous and you felt quite vulnerable on the open mountainside. Laura stopped here while Oliver continued to the top of the climb. It took 2 hours to complete the climb and he just made it back down before the sun got too hot. We were lucky that the climb was open today as it had been closed for at least 3 days due to the wind conditions. However today the climb opened at 7am and closed at 8am due to high temperatures forecast.

After 9am it was quieter around the base of the rock and we wandered around looking at the rock from different angles. The weather continued to get hotter and the flies continued to get worse so we got the 10.30am bus back to the resort. After a dip in the pool we get a transfer to the airport to catch our flight to Cairns. Our flight takes off at 3.30pm and arrives into Cairns a couple of hours later. The clocks go forwards again by 30 minutes so we are now 9 hours ahead of the UK.

The heat in Cairns is hot and humid so we notice this while waiting for a bus t take us to our hostel for the night. Travellers Oasis is a friendly hostel located near the main shopping centre in the city, we dump our bags and go looking for somewhere to eat.
