On the first day of our Southern trip, we went down to Ranong province and into Kuraburi to a village that was devastated by the 2004 tsunami. We took a boat to a floating hotel, a community tourism project that the village started with Loreal to help fund the rebuilding of their village. The floating hotel is in the middle of a river surrounded by mangroves, it was so cool! The hotel was made of bamboo, and electricity was through a generator, so we only have light at night, and only until 11 o'clock. Also, the shower heads were made of coconuts, it was really neat! Once we got there, we saw monkeys running around in the mangroves (which are a major part of the mangrove ecosystem) which was amazing! We then went net fishing, and we learned how they fished in the area. They tie one end of the net to mangrove roots and then let the net out, and put the other end on a stake in the water. We used "plunger" to "call the fish" to the net, then left for about a half hour to let the fish come. We went to a floating fish farm and saw the fish and a lot of Lobsters. We went back to the net, and we had caught about a dozen small fish and one shrimp, which was really cool. After fishing, we went back and had dinner (which was some of the best fish I have ever had in my life!), and we learned how to "thai-dye". We made star and flower designs, it was really fun. We finished out the night with some euchre, it was a good day!

Welcome back on line!
I'm glad to see your latest blog, and to note the monkeys at the base of the mangrove trees in your first photo. I'm still inept at handling this computer, but I was able to blow up your photo, and I did see two monkeys. Your Mom told me that you now have a new camera --- that's good news!
