I have spent the last few days in Phuket. I flew in on Thursday evening and arrived at my guesthouse, Fantasy Hill, at 9 at night. The place was located between two beaches called Kata and Karon. This area was a lot more mellow than the more popular party beach called Patong which was further north. So, Fantasy Hill was the cheapest place I could find in the area. It was not really any fantasy I have ever had though. No hot water and a little grubby. It was in a good location though and an easy walk to the beaches. My first night there I walked around a bit and saw a lot of bars with many thai girls waiting to conquer a man (prostitutes). I went to the first bar where I did not see a plethora of girls lined up at the bar or a stipper pole. The place seemed pretty mellow. But, low and behold, the girls came. It was really interesting to watch. There was some guys at the bar who were pretty cute and normal for all I could tell...but to my surprise they were also taken in my some not so pretty girls. Then, as I looked around the bar, I saw a number of other white tourists also pairing up with different girls which started coming out of the woodwork. It was very good people watching to say the least. After I finished my beer I went down the street to the bar at the bottom of the hill from where I was staying. The bartender was a crazy old women who kept dancing around and flinging her wig off her head. This place was actually pretty cool. They had a number of different games around the bar with which they would play with the patrons. The people next to me were playing Jenga with the crazy lady. I ended up talking to them a bit, they were from Mexico City. Then the crazy lady took a few dildo's out from under the bar and set them down in front of us and started making weird noises and dancing around. It was very funny. That finished off my night though, I went home and got some sleep.

It rained the next morning but let up around 10 so I went to get breakfast. I went a ways down the street to an

area ravaged by the Tsunami and was all new and rebuilt. Right when I was finishing up eating it started to pour. It was some intense rain. I tried to wait it out, but after about 15 minutes of it the streets were starting to flood and there looked to be no end in sight, so I thought it was best to try and wade through the flood waters back to my hotel high on the hill. Luckily I brought my rain coat. It was pretty amazing how quickly everything flodded. I was walking in knee deep water at times. I had to walk in the street and jump from storefront to storefront. At first I was a little scared and stressed out, but eventually I just started laughing and took a few pics when I found some cover. Once I made it home and safely back to my room, the rain stopped. And as quickly as the streets flooded, the water receded. I finally was able to make it to the beach around 2 in the afternoon after walking around the streets at Kata Beach and seeing the news at the bookstore about the plane that crashed in New Jersey. Very sad, and not the best thing to see on the tv after not seeing any news for about a week. So, I finally made it to the beach. Very beautiful and relaxing. A lot of topless women and speedos. I'm not even going to comment on that except I hope that elsewhere in Thailand I will not have to see that again.

After the beach I headed down the street to Karon, the beach area to the north of where I was staying. There was a bunch of shops and places to eat. Shopkeepers here in Phuket are very aggressive and rude. Not at all like in Chiang Mai and Bangkok. It was very annoying and was starting to make me mad even. I could not walk in anywhere without the shopkeepers following me around and trying to pick things out for me. One shopkeeper, this young girl, was following at my heels and glaring at me while I shopped, so I started making circles around the store. That was pretty fun. I started home after that and sat down for a beer on the way at a bar playing Sin City on a movie screen with a very bad cover band playing on a stage in the bar. The singer was classic, he had a curly mullet and had a really funky voice. I finished off my night here and headed home.

Today I went to the beach in the morning and then took the bus to Phuket Town to do some needed shopping before I head out to the islands and to catch a bus tomorrow to Krabi. Trying to find the bus station today was a bit of a chore and I walked around in circles for a while. I tried asking directions from a few people with no luck. One girl actually made fun of me and pushed me out of the bar I was trying to walk into to ask directions. I can't wait to leave here. They really do not like the tourists around here and are not afraid to show it. I have come across some nice people as well, but for the most part Phuket has been a pretty negative experience. Anyway, I did find the bus station finally and bought my ticket. I leave tomorrow morning. I also went to a big shopping center and bought a new skirt, my one skirt that I brought is way too hot and is starting to get a little gross to be wearing every day.

The place I am staying at tonight is called Joe Mansion...yes, that is spelled right. It is pretty nice though, and has a/c and a hot shower, which I really needed for tonight.

Well, that is all for today. I am not sure when I will be seeing internet again, I am going to stay on an island and I am not sure what he services are like there. I think I will be staying in Railay at Hat Ton Sai, which was recommended by Annie and looks to be pretty chill from what I have been reading. The next few days will hopefully be relaxing on the beach and staying in a bungalow.

Oh yes, I almost forgot. Happy Valentines Day. I saw a bunch of couples get married in the mall today. I was going to take pictures, but decided my memories were enough for that occasion. There was some really cheesy singing and dancing that went along with the ceremony, including some very provocative dancing from a tattooed Thai chick.

Sorry, my blog is lacking in pics today. Haven't been in the photographing mood.
