Happy Birthday to you! It seems this month has been full of birthdays and birthday parties. And here in Honduras, they sing the "Birthday Song" with a twist. After the English version, they add "ya queremos pastel..." which means freely translated "now we want cake"! (and it continues with "and coca-cola also, and coffee for the old folks")
When I returned from the states, I rested for almost a full two weeks. After school I would go back to the house and do absolutely nothing. Which was very good for my health, but bad for my social skills! But I did get better, thanks to God. When I returned there was a full week of hot weather and I faithfully took a strange tonic my mother conjured up which did the trick!!
The 15th of this month my dear brother complete 30 years on this earth. Two days later, the pastor's son turned 3. We had a nice celebration in the church, and he received a TON of gifts! I bought him rubber boots because he runs around in the mud puddles with sandals and always has raisin feet. The other day he said, "Mira, Anita, mira!!" (Look, Anna,
Look!) as he showed me his new boots that he had used in their coffee field.
Then the following week, the director of the school turned...I don't actually know how many years! But we threw her a surprise birthday party at a teacher's house and had a very nice time. The lights went out about 4 times, so we occasionally grilled using a candle to see how done the meat was, but it all turned out alright in the end. We ate WAY too much, and everyone enjoyed themselves.
The next big event was a school field trip to the Mayan Ruins. Only 2nd and 3rd grades went, because they are older and their Social Studies books specifically address the Ruins. They were amazingly well behaved, paid attention, and asked really good questions. I was so proud of the kids!! We spent a good two hours walking around, and, as a treat the kids got to walk through the museum. Everyone brought a sack lunch and we enjoyed a leisurely lunch in the park. It is so beautiful there, I am going to have to make at least one more trip before I leave!
Last weekend, my
friend Vilma and I went to her parent's house in Copan. We sat around all afternoon chatting with her mother and relatives. Although there are 15 people living in pretty much a two bedroom shack, they have a great view from their house so I snapped some nice pictures. Now I know why Vilma is such a nice person (other than the fact that she is a godly woman), it is because her family is SO nice!! Later that night we went to a concert but left early because it was a little too pentecostal for us. haha The entire row of us were from the Baptist church and we just sat there as people started shaking and dancing wildly and falling down. The singer sang the same song for two hours and there was only half the people on their feet when he finished. The other half had either danced so wildly they had to sit down, had fallen down and were not able to get up, or had left. It was very interesting. We boring Baptists left early but it was quite an experience for me!!
This past Friday we had a Fun Day at school. It
was more like FUNDS day, the teachers sold food, games, etc. to make money for our funds. We are going to go to a teacher training conference in March and it is a little pricey, so we are fund raising for it. The kids had a blast, the teachers as well, and we got a good start on our funds. There were table games (which I was in charge of), "wall painting, apple bobbing, water balloon tossing, buying kisses (but this time the kisses were marshmallows) and the winner game, the slippery slide they pulled out at the end of the day. The kids pulled off their socks and shoes and slid down the plastic slide, they had a riot!!! Afterward, the teachers got a treat too, PIZZA in Copan! We ate to our heart's content and left very satisfied!
This month has been full of fun, but there is still work to do. Teaching English is always difficult, and now the Reading class stories are more difficult and the science concepts are very difficult to explain. Please pray that I would be able to always do my best teaching the children.
Thanks for keeping up on things
here in Honduras. Have a great month!! - anna
