Sand Pictionary
A v.proud Hattie...although not sure she completely understood the rules of the game, since she talked through most of her pictures. 8/1/09 = Coffs Harbour
Was really looking forward to a lay in today, but just didn't work out. Rolled over at 7am and got really bad cramp in left leg. Took all my effort not to scream out loud; cramp = not good when sharing a room with 5 other people. Gritted teeth while awful cramp came and went for 30mins, then had to try and get down ladder of top bunk to get to toilet. Ladders awful at best of times, but when only got 1 functioning leg and trying to be quiet = nightmare! Hobbled/hopped down it and crawled off to bathroom. V.sore leg and getting back up ladder was worse than getting down. Had to prop leg up for next hour then...no chance of any more sleep! Waited until everyone else up at 9/10ish, then started to get on with day, leg or no leg!
Had breakfast, packed up and checked out just before 11. Still had most of day left in Coffs and was good weather outside, so decided to have a walk to beach. Had been told it was a long walk, but needed to walk leg off anyway. Ian and another guy (sorry
Ian (a.k.a. the scottish guy)
Did a v.good picture for Johnny Vegas. I'll let you try and guess what the picture was for his first word. V.clever Ian! didn't catch your name) came too. Had to go through town to get there and had a look in a few shops. Was a nice little town, but was little. Soon came out of it and looked at walk ahead. No beach in sight and day had completely clouded over. As a group, contemplated not going, but gald we went ahead and carried on walking. Was a long (v.long) and quite painful walk and took around 50mins. Good that when finally got to harbour, there were some more shops and got a beautiful sluch puppie to cool me down. Even when cloudy out here, is still boiling and still really catch sun.
Walked onto beach and suprised to see how quiet it was; hardly any people there at all. Could see some people further up beach, so decided to walk towards them. That's when we came across the giant creek! Was a mass of water running down the beach that cut it into 2 sections. All the people we could see were at the other side of the creek - typical! Creek was v.wide and soon found it was deep too. Guys crossed first and when I saw water
up around their thighs, I really didn't want to do it....didn't have bikini on today. But they got across, so I had to do it too. Found best path I could, pulled shorts right up and tiptoed across water. Don't know how managed to not get pants wet, but I did. Beach not really that nice (although didn't help that was cloudy), but found a spot and settled in it anyway. Definitley sitting on this beach after journey taken to get here!
Laid down and realised how hot it was. Really should have put cream on earlier. Slapped some cream on and tried to get some sleep for a while. Caught the end of someone skydiving, who landed on beach right next to us; looked pretty cool, but still going to give it a miss I think. Snoozed for quite a long time and when woke up, everyone was getting a little restless in heat. Decided to introduce them all to wonder of sand pictionary. Went down a treat and again passed loads of time! In remaining time, did one of Hat's famous things....a crossword (wow...we are v.exciting), then headed off beach for 3:45 pick up. So glad hostel
The crossing of the creek
A giant expanse of water running across beach that had to cross to get to other side. At 5ft2, I didn't like my chances of keeping my pants dry! man picking us up and didn't have to do big walk again. Back at hostel all had to do was grab our bags, say our good byes, then head off for greyhound bus. Had some sandwiches while waiting for it to come (Hattie = sandwich queen) and was really pleased when bus came on time again; greyhound buses have been brilliant so far!
Quite a long bus journey to Byron Bay and didn't get there until 8:45pm. Listened to music for most of journey and Deb was waiting for us at bus stop when we got in. Been a week since seen her and was really wierd and really nice. Had a mini chat when got off bus, but then had to find out how to get to our hostel. Hattie rang and hostel man said that we had missed last bus because greyhound bus 10mins late - unbelievable. Told us it was only a 10min walk to hostel, so off we went. Started to feel strain almost straight away. Tired because of travelling all day and bags were really hurting. Hat couldn't face walk and kept ringing hostel man everytime we passed a phone box just to see how much further it was. Must have rang at least 3 times - ha! When did finally get there, Hat was really mad at hostel man and told him so. He must have sussed her out in first 2mins, because asked her if she wanted a free beer and she immediatley calmed down! Ended up having a laugh and a joke with him....the wonder of beer! Checked out our room and looked prety cool. Deb not staying with us tonight, but coming tomorrow. Plonked on floor with free beers and had better catch up of all things seen and done, then an hour later, walked Deb back because was pretty late and all tired. Walk from hostel to town definitely not a 10min walk like hostel man had told us! Didn't really enjoy walk and Hat definitely didn't. Dropped Deb off and tried to get taxi back, but didn't work out so ended up walking both ways. Byron Bay looked really nice and really excited to wake up and explore tomorrow.
As soon as got back, went off to bed; was already midnight at this point. Stumbled around in dark because people already sleeping and clambered into top bunk. Byron Bay looks cool 😊
