Our route (sort of)

Early this morning we docked in Las Palmas on Grand Canaria. Unfortunately, it was a cold, windy and rainy day so we were not inclined to do much. I tried to find a WiFi site so I could use my laptop to send some photos, but since it was Sunday almost everything was closed. My computer showed some available connections, but their names didn't indicate where to go to find their passwords. The main purpose of the stop was to refuel because now we are heading across the Atlantic to the Caribbean whcih will take 6-7 days. Our next stop is the island of Antigua (which the British pronounce as if there isn't a "u".)

We love this ship! The average age must be at least 70, but they are the most civilised (their spelling) group of people I have ever been around. Everyone is SO polite. The food is excellent and the waiters are so good they are practically invisible. We've enjoyed our afternoon tea and today had beans on toast for lunch. There are four Brits and one Scot at our table (Yes, we have assigned tables and sittings) and we really like all of them. The Scot says "Aye" to everything and also uses the phrase "a wee little bit" anytime we would say "some." We're getting a wonderful education in being British. And the Scot has made it clear that there's a difference between being English and being British -- something I'd never thought of. I've had to get an electrical transformer installed in our room because even though our pre-departure info said each room had American outlets, ours didn't. But that is only a minor quibble.

Mom and I have felt fine every day. Maybe a little sleepy, but that has more to do with the time zone change and rocking of the boat, I think. Now, as we head West, we will be gaining an hour occaisionally which will be very nice.

Which reminds me, we love the way the Brits say their food is "nice" or "lovely." It's amazing how quickly we've started saying the same.

If you're wondering what we do all day, the answer is mostly "nothing." And it is wonderful! I've been reading "Pillars of the Earth" (finally) which I think is one of the most poorly written novels I have ever read, but at the same time I can't put it down. Such a soap opera! On the drive from Heathrow to Southampton I noticed highway signs for Winchester and other cities that are mentioned in the book. Mom found a book by Walter Wangerin in the ship's library which she is enjoying. So we are happy just getting into the routine of the ship. There are lots of scheduled activities which we will sample as the days go by.

All for now.

Howdy from Brrrrrrrrrrrrr Minnesota
Suz and Grandma, Jackie just sent me your blog and I thought you might like to read something from someone else. I am presently in NYC on a 3-day shadowing engagement at Morgan Stanley. Not sure what my role is yet, but at least I am now earning my big $$$$$s :-) Sounds like you two are having a great time and I told Jackie that it was probably best that you were seated with several people as it gives you another opportunity to mingle with other people. I know our trip to Alaska exposed us to some nice foreigners, 3 Brits and 1 Canadian and a couple from the good 'ol US of A. Happy sailing, Mike

Don't get lazy!
So just sitting around and reading soap operas eh? Sounds better than sitting inside a blanket freezing your buns off. (The buns off would be nice if it really happened) While you're enjoying yourself we are just trying to stay warm - '25 this morning and Nisswa was without power from 4am to 10 am! 50 inside! Have you found the gym? Is there a sauna? Any night time shows? Any single guys in their 50s or 60s?!! Enjoy!

Cold here
Hi: Really cold here. Probably won't get above +5 all week. -20 this morning. Marlo's thermostat out on Jetta, so she took Subaru. Traffic never above 5mph whole way to work today for her. Do you check startribune.com at all? Would help you keep up. Jack is not napping today. Never a good thing! Bill
