It’s embarrassing how little I have done over the last week and a half. the bus from Mumbai wasn’t as bad as thought it would be and turns out its much colder at night than I thought and was flipping freezing for most of it, met two Canadians in Mumbai going the same way as myself, arrived in Mapusa, Goa, at about noon jumped on a bus to the northern most beach, Arambol, waited for 45 mins on the bus in the midday sun before we left. Arrived in Arambol and got a local to bring us down to the beach in the back of his pick up. Lonely Planet describes Arambol “Shoved aside by the consumer age, the hippy 60’s needed somewhere to hide… the 60s finally found its never -never land” and it wasn’t wrong, (I’m don’t know many hippies so just gonna talk about it honestly) the place was weird, a really really nice weird though. Found a place to stay easily enough, right beside the beach.
The next days were pretty much just spent on the beach swimming, reading, eating and sleeping. Rented scooters two of the days and went down the coast exploring, almost ran
into the side of a cows twice that just walked out of a hedge straight into the middle of the road. Ended up going through a biggish town and the traffic was crazy. People beeping and overtaking everywhere no indicators or breaking. Then Mike ran out of petrol on the way back so the two of us had to go off in search or petrol, bought it in a water bottle from a local shop, so obviously happens a good bit.
Went fishing one morning in a old timber boat, got up at 6 am pushed the boat down the beach and headed off, dropped our net then headed up the coast dolphin watching, after a hour or so headed back stopped at some random net, nicked a rock fish from it and went back to our own which had feck all, a few small mackerel look-alike things a squid and hundreds if tiny fish, the place we were staying cooked up the rockfish and mackerel that evening was lovely.
Went to a trance club one night, 7 of us piled into a taxi, I was in the back with 4 Swedes was brilliant, I love the language.
The club was a dump and the music was terrible, and full of hippies. There was a party on the beach one night, with a fire show. That was deadly but the woman was nuts, after the show was just a load of hippies, outa their face on something dancing, went to bed at about 9 that night, yep I’m still a miserable old shit sometimes. The following night a German guy, Philip organized a bonfire down the beach, bought two fish, gutted them in the surf in the dark and then cooked them on the bonfire, was the nicest fish I’v had, very sandy though, spent the rest of the night drinking, on the way home, fairly pissed (on my own) walked through a big group of dogs howling at me I was flipping terrified, just looked at my feet and didn’t make eye contact.
Left for another beach after a week in Arambol, heads hanging from the bonfire the night before we just got a taxi instead of braving the bus, arrived in Anjuna about 20 km south and found a gem of house just beside the beach that cost myself and the two Canadians a grand
total of 5 euro a night. Once we got rid if the ants and cockroach was just like home, we went there because of the famous Wednesday flea market, but ended up sleeping through it, didn’t want any fleas any way, HAHAHAHA! Went to a local club that night was brilliant, 8 euro in and free drink all night, still a rip off by their standards, free in if wearing white, which I was but the feckers said shorts weren’t proper dress. On the way home we were seriously hassled by the local poches, again I was terrified and just kept walking.
Woke up the next day and tried to find my head but no joy, so decided to get the feck away from the beaches ASAP, came to Panaji, the capital of Goa. Its mad parts of it are just like Portugal and other parts are kinda like India but not quite India, brain has gone soft from being out of the city for so long, rented a scooter today which was fun in the town, at least this one came with a helmet, but got out of the town safely. Went to the old capital, Old Goa,
the fallen city is home to some of the biggest churches in Asia, however most of them on their last legs. Was interesting to see some Christian areas, which is big in Goa in general. Arsed round there for the morning then back to type this up.
Heading inland to Hampi tonight 14 hours on a bus which is cool, but my mp3 player broke during the week and I finished my book today, not that you can read on the roads are so bumpy, so gonna try find a portable cd player and some western music. Want to get back into real India, so far I’ve missed Mumbai a lot, Goa is too laid back and I spent too much time here, back traveling on my own again, since leaving Anjuna. Considering leaving Thailand etc for another trip, there is so much to do here in India Thailand would be too rushed to see it properly. Thinking about trekking in Nepal, it looks amazing I’ll see though. Still love India, but want to keep moving now set myself a fairy busy itinerary over the next two weeks, hopefully flying up to the north around the 22nd
Talk
soon
