Even though it seemed like it would be better to be back in Sydney, New Year's was really good...it's all what you make of it, right? Had a fairly lazy day of lounging at the pool with Els, my Belgian roommate, and doing not much else. Again, not much to do in Cairns unless you go out for a day tour somewhere. In the evening, we went to dinner and came back to meet Mette, our Danish roommate, and Chen and Sylvia (Germany). Headed out to the Esplanade to watch the fireworks...I'm sure nothing compared to Sydney but hey, I've never seen fireworks on New Year's in the states now have I? It seemed like everything might come to a halt when it started pouring but luckily it lasted less than five minutes. Then the usual bar hopping and general mayhem began. Needless to say, I was exhausted the next day and ended up not doing much on my last day in Cairns either. As a result, I was mad at myself.... I didn't come to Australia to have wasted days, but I know I shouldn't beat myself up over it....it's holiday and you can't always be doing something I guess.

In reflection, 2005 was an amazing year for myself and my family. I was truly blessed in so many ways: I won a radio station contest which in part allowed me to see my favorite band multiple times; my best friend got married and I was able to attend and reunite with her and other old friends; I finished my first year of law school alive; I met some incredible people from all over the world and have been able to see several close friends here in Oz, and now in less than a week I will set foot on my fourth continent in less than six months. I was able to spend lots of time with my family when not traveling, my grandfather had bypass surgery which went perfectly, my sister was able to go to Europe, my brother got a girlfriend (yikes!), and four out of the five of us were able to take a vacation, for the first time in awhile. I truly think 2006 will be just as good or better though....Cheers everyone.
