Hvar
View from the fortress 08-09-08 Laid back Hvar and the Journey North
We really enjoyed our second day in Hvar. We went to the town of Hvar, which is a very trendy place, filled with large ocean going boats, and lots of Americans and rich folk from everywhere. It has an imposing fortress on the hill above the town and a lovely harbour This is a nice place to visit, but has more of the feel of Dubrovnik, and not so homely but we are glad we stayed near Jelsa - about 15km away.
Jelsa has a really nice laid back feel, we had a very interesting local meal the first night - pig on a spit. The owner was quite a character - plying us with Racija - grape based alcohol to chat over the bill, this lead to some confusion, I think more on his part due to the amount of Racija he must have had to drink with each of the dinners that evening. The best thing about the place though was the view - sitting just a couple of metres from the ocean. The following night we though we would have a pizza and some beers (Karlovakia). While
Hvar
2000 year old dirty dishes we were sitting out front of the resturaunt they were setting up seating for a concert in the town square it started once all the locals had to come out from the church (it was Sunday night). We watched the operatic / folk singing - it was excellent though we didn’t know any of the songs - the locals seems to - one of the songs (Moré Moré) seemed to be a big hit - Karen?? It was a really nice thing to see all of the town and some tourists sitting out together. And then it seemed like it was going to rain. The locals were keen for this - it hasn’t rained on Hvar for over 3 months, after our camping rain experience in Hungary we quickly headed back to get the camp sorted, but the rain stopped before it had really began and the next day was as a hot and dry as the previous (about 30 deg).
We headed north most of the way across Croatia towards Slovenia. We got off the motorway at the Slovenian border and took a minor road from Metlika to Novo Mesto which green and lush was full of twisty
turns and motorcycles, a nice introduction to Slovenia. Unfortunately it was getting late so we thought we would get on to the motorway to Ljubljana. We needed to buy a vinyette (road tax for the bike) - OK - but unfortunately they only sell 6 month ones, not very tourist friendly…

30 Degrees
I need to go somewhere with that temperature. We went to the North-west of Scotland and the temperature struggled to reach more than 17.5! I did swim in the sea one day though when there was a drop of sun - it didn't last long the next day it was back to raining. Your pictures are really great - I guess you're uploading at Internet Cafes or did you take a laptop?
