Lakes on different levels, all connected by waterfalls

02-08-08 So much water and flying fish - Plitvice National Park

We have relied on either the Zumo GPS or detailed maps to navigate around. Zumo - where the coverage is available has been excellent - best money I ever spent. However sometimes we get caught without maps or GPS, and while its stressful, it creates a good reason to talk to the locals. We crossed over the border from Hungary into Croatia and toured along small secondary roads on route to Plitvice. We traveled very close to the Serbian border, the villages became few and far between as we went closer to the border, and had some interesting chats in English and broken German.

We meant to camp today but the cost of a camp site and all the extras in the extremely large and boring camp site was only slightly less than a room in the chalet style pub down the road - so the choice was easy.

So on to Plitvice - have a look at the photos, they can never do it justice, this place is amazing. It is set on limestone kaste, water flows through the limestone hillsides cleaning the water, it is crystal clear, and different times of day, different lighting, and different particles in the water the colours change. The interesting / strange thing about the water falls it that they come from springs in the hillside instead of any river or stream, it creates some interesting views with fast flowing water moving through trees down the hillside instead of streams. To keep the lakes in pristine condition you aren’t allowed to swim in them, it was a temping thought to just jump in luckily it stated to rain to cool things down.

Tomorrow we are heading on to Dubrovnik, locals say the border crossings through Bosnia are fairly simple - we’ll see how we get on.
