The Fernandez Baca family rented out an entire school for their family reunion. This picture shows only a small fraction of the family!
I arrived in Cusco a few days ago, and so far have been having a great time! I am here for two weeks to learn Spanish. Another American student, Alex, and I are staying with a host family here, the Fernandez Baca family. They are an older couple, Monica and Jorge, with three grown children, and the nicest people. They have been very welcoming and very willing to accustom us to the culture. They speak no english, so living with them will definitely help me to improve my spanish (which is desperately needed). It is also nice having another American students also living with the same host family.

On Sunday, the family had a family reunion, unlike any family reunion that I've ever been to. There were about 150 people there!! There were so many people they had to introduce each individual family because not everyone knows each other. It was a huge fiesta with lots of awesome peruvian food, dancing, and games. It lasted all day long!!

Yesterday, Monday, was my first day at the language school. The school is located right inside the town center in the Plaza de Armas. It is such a cute town with

lots of shops, restaurants, and cafes (also lots of tourists, so the local people are very used to us Americans). I had my first language classes yesterday afternoon...my teachers are really nice and helpful. There are 4 of us students in my class, and basically we sat and had conversation in spanish for about 4 hours yesterday. I've already learned so much spanish in the past three days!!! And I've also realized how much I really don't know! Last night, all of the new students went out to dinner in the Plaza and enjoyed awesome food and music. They seem to eat a lot of avocado, cheese, potato, and meat here. Everything I've eaten has been so good!! They also eat a lot of cuy (guinea pig) here, which I will probably stay away from 😉.

A few surprises since I've been here: It is freezing here in Cusco!! It is there winter here right now which means it is about 70 F during the day (in the sun!) but about 30 F in the morning and at night. I definitely wasn't prepared for this, but yesterday went on an excursion to buy a fleece (which I found a

cheap North Face knock-off for ~$18). Also, I've felt a bit sick since I've been here. We are about 3000 meters above sea level and the altitude has definitely been affecting me. I feel completely wasted after just climbing a short staircase. Hopefully my body will adjust soon!
