The ObeliskThe ObeliskThe Obelisk

Built in 1936 to comemorate the 400th anniversary of the city´s foundation. It is built on the spot where the Argentinian flag was hoisted for the first time
This is probably our last blog before we go to Europe, so drawing from the Roger Dear book of phrases, "like it or lump it!"
We arrived around midday, and after checking in at the hostel we went to grab a bit to eat. Maccas was the call for lunch although we got all excited at the sight of Burger King, after not seeing it for eight months. This was our first mistake! It went down well but as Axe found out , it came up well also. Needless to say we didn´t eat there for the rest of our stay.
Our weekend coincided with the Meeting of the Americas, and there were hundreds of people protesting against the presence of George W. Bush in the country. It started out as a peacefull march, but turned into a riot later on. He must be getting used to the welcome riot everywhere he goes!
We saw a number of sights over the four days, which you´ll see in the photos. There is lots of nice little cafes and beautiful architecture in the city. The portenos (people from Buenos Aires) are very friendly people and we had a really nice, relaxing weekend.

Casa Rosada (pink house)

It is the seat of the national government. The pink colour was a decision of former president Sarmiento in 1873 to symbolise the union between two pollitical parties, the federal(red)and the unitarian(white). Another theory is that the colour comes from painting the palace with white paint mixed with the blood of cattle, which was a common practicein those days.

This neighborhood was born as the first port of the City, its first inhabitants, most of them italian immigrants, built they houses with wood and zinc and painted them with left over of the paintings of the ships - this colorful custom was kept until our days.

This is our favorite building, but we still haven´t found out what it is. We think it might be the medical school.
