I'm currently in Bali and on the road to visit one of the volcanic peaks north of Ubud. Present company is American if not English speaking...except for one silent and sulking member of the troup. Unfortunately for them, it's not me!

The weather is little changed from that of Cambodia, but the island is beautiful with it's lush greenery and narrow twisted lanes. It also offers every mod con and differs very little from Hawaii from what I can tell. The abundance of the Aussie is perhaps a main departure point and there is far more of the Balinese culture evident than can be found on the Hawaiin archipelago.

Suckling pig on rice is a popular festive meal but then there is the option of all things duck on the local menu too. Failing that, there are all manner of American franchised fast food options. My goal here is to do as little as possible, do almost nothing outside of an aircon bubble and to be a curmudgeon (spelling Deb?). My stock phrase to get people off my back "I've just spent a month doing that/seeing that/tasting that/smelling that...in Cambodia"!

They don't have rice paddies ascending volcano sides in Cambodia (they do in Thailand and other countries I've visited) hence my concession to play tourist one last time with my friends, hoping for an occasion to shop handicrafts on the way back. Local Ikat.weaving comes immediately to mind. I feel the obligation to support the reviving skills as well as the wood carving and silversmith cottage indstries!!

While the hardcore surf the Uluwatu swells, I relax and write to others who sometimes have little better to do than read this blog. Off to view the clouds covering the volcano top now and send a "Thank You" to those of you who kept company with me this time. See you again soon.
