Palm Tree lined street in Mohammedia
Bonjour from Mohammedia! We have travelled only 25 km north from Casablanca but we in a totally different environment. The bus trip here was also very different and fun! The hostel in Casablanca was centrally located and clean, it was very damp and cold. Lucky me, I got the flu - fever, chills the whole nine yards. So we decided to leave. Mohammedia was recommeded to us by the hostel guy so we trundled off to the bus "station" or rather spot on the road where the buses stop. We got all our bags on the bus, and ourselves, and sat back to watch life from a Moroccan bus. The bus was full and so Peter said he would give up his seat if a woman got on, so at the last moment, this woman and child got on the bus (side note: you enter at the back and leave at the front of the bus here). Peter offered up his seat and she declined. This is because she was begging for money. She started at the front of the bus, handed out a little card in Arabic to each passenger then made her way back to the front of the

bus and told her story in a very woeful voice - which of course we didn't understand at all! She then made her way back, collected all the cards and money and got off at the next stop. As she got off, a gentleman in a very elaborate and colourful costume got on. His hat was conical in shape made out of tassels of red, yellow and orange. His dress was also colourful and tasselled, but he had small instruments or batons strung across his chest. He too told his story, but in a powerful deep voice, collected the money and left.
Later an older blind fellow boarded the bus and gave his own speel for money. We marveled at the way no one is bothered by the beggars on the transportation. It's just the way it is. No one is rude or derrogatory to them - it is so different from home in that way.

We arrived in Mohammedia early, and made our way to Hotel Sabah (no hostels in Mohammedia, just two hotels). It was so early that they did not have a room ready yet, but sent us up to the room to watch the staff make the bed and put the finishing touches on the room. I think the ladies could tell I was not feeling well, as one of them put the warm pillowcases (out of a dryer!) onto my face. I could have melted right there! As soon as they left, I crawled into bed and didn't surface for 2.5 days. Peter has been taking very good care of me and he has also been out and about exploring our little town (or so I thought - but it is quite big at a second glance) and bringing back water and treats to me. The best discovery so far has been a Patisserie only a couple of blocks away that makes lovely baguettes and delicious pastries - just what a flu-gripped body needs! 😊 Peter also discovered Cafe Miami (not exactly the name I was expecting in Morocco) and their delicious Moroccan tea (heavily sweetened mint tea). Everyone has been very friendly toward us as we bumble our way through with my high school french and Peter's phrasebook.

We will be leaving for Rabat on Monday, it is time to move on and I am getting my strength back so we will hit the road again.

Until the next time - Au Revoir from Mohammedia!
Laini and Peter
