Sawat dii khrap!

I'm going to start with a massive cliche and what some of you may think is a huge piece of hyperbole but there is no better way to sum this place up; we have found paradise! But first, a little on how we got here.

We were supposed to meet our coach at 6.30pm the day we left Bangkok but true to form we didn't leave untill 7.30pm, after having to walk a good three miles accross the city with our full packs. The coach, to be fair, was pretty decent, if you could ignore the endless movies being played full blast for the entire journey and the stench coming from the bog! The coach arrived at its destination at about 6.30am so we climbed out only to be told we had to get a songthaew (a kind of jeep with seats running along the open back) to the ferry port. We arrived there in the blazing sun only to be told, after waiting half an hour, that we were to board another bus to take us to the real port! Two hours later we got there, climbed on board the ferry, claimed a place in the sun at the bow and settled in for a gorgeous, calm trip to Ko Pha Ngan via Ko Samui (one and a half hours). Arriving on the island we were greated with the driver from Coconut beach bungalows who, after making us wait a further hour drove us the precipitous few miles to the north of the island and to our destination, Hat Khom beach! 22 hours after we set off and over 36 without sleep we were finally here!

A little about Hat Khom: the beach is a gorgeous, crescent shaped stretch of fine white sand bitten out of the surrounding jungle. A rocky headland denotes one edge of the beach, while the other is blocked by jungle, behind the beach large, thickly forested hills rise into the azure sky whilst looking North you have only the crystal clear, turquiose and jade ocean. There are three bungalow outfits on this beach, each comprising perhaps twenty huts; ours is on the eastern end where from our modest room we have incredible views accross the beach and hills and the sea not twenty yards away.

Since arriving here some days ago (completely lost track of time) we have indulged our inner bums (no laughing at the back please) by doing a whole heap of nothing, unless swinging in a hammock counts as hard work these days! Actually we have done a lot of that but I need a little more to keep me interested so we have taken a couple of jungle walks through some serious forest replete with hanging vines and all manner of creepy crawlies; real tarzan shit! There is a pristine coral reef about forty yards off shore and many incredible hour has been spent floating above this, marveling at the abundance of life below the waves. I'm no fishyphologist so can't give you the names of what we saw but there were fish in their thousands, big, small, timid or brave, irradescent or drab, but all so beautiful. The coral also comes in an incredible variety, some shaped like umbrella's, others like fans and some like enormous brains the size of a very big rock!

The food here is delicious and nutritious and yet to have any unwanted side effect's, the people are so friendly, relaxed and happy (everyone walks around with huge grins on there faces), the scenery is stunning, the beach is deserted and we are both supremely happy, content and peacefull.
