We had never originally planned to visit Adelaide on our trip, but a lot of people we had met on our travels had recommended going, so we thought why not! While we really wished we could have done the train across from Perth, we decided to fly to save an extra couple of days so we could do Adelaide and Melbourne before getting into Sydney ready for Christmas.

Adelaide is a pretty small city, and you could walk across the centre in about 30 minutes or so, but it is really lively in places and fantastic just to wander from street to street as there are great little cafes and bars dotted all over. There is a real outdoor dining culture in Adelaide, and the street we stayed on was lined with restaurants with outdoor tables... and as Adelaide seems to be home to people from all over the world, especially Asia, there was every type of cuisine represented....however after spending a couple of months in Asia we decided to tuck into some very juicy Aussie steaks instead!!

We were hoping to visit Kangaroo Island while in Adelaide, which is a fantastic island just off the shore, with some amazing coastal scenery and some great wildlife spotting opportunities, including a large amount of Koala's. Unfortunately, it has recently been ravaged by bush fires and a lot of best areas in the south of the island were off limits so we couldn't visit which was a shame, but just another reason to come back!

After that plan was foiled, we decided just to stay in Adelaide and do a bit of exploring around the city and sample some more of the many bars and restaurants. The central area is surrounded by parkland with the river Torrens flowing past the north of the centre so we spent most of the time walking around the city and parks enjoying the sun...

After a relaxing couple of days in Adelaide we are off to Melbourne on our first overnight bus in Australia... after our experience on the bus in Vietnam earlier in our travels we are hoping for a smooth journey and at least a couple of hours sleep!

Bussing it overnight in Australia
Guys, Happy new year to you - hope you had a great time wherever you seen in the new year. By now you'll have already experienced overnight buses in Australia - brings back great memories for me of a journey from Adelaide to Darwin (via Alice Springs). Make sure you take every opportunity to stock up on pies at the stops ;-) If you can't sleep, the drivers are always good for a chat ... Cheers, Niall.
