Believe it or not, all I brought with me for my 35 day trip was an oversized backpack. I somehow have survived alternating between two pairs of jeans. However, in Dali I sent one pair to the cleaners and never got it back! I was pretty unhappy, but left to Lijiang and called the cleaners 3 times to follow up. I was pretty desperate for another pair of pants, so while I was in Lijiang I picked up a pair of jeans for Y230. They are OK, but not the greatest pair of jeans. Anyway, I came back to Dali and they found my tshirt, but no jeans. In my broken Chinese I argued about what they were going to do to compensate me. I got in touch with the owner (老板) of the cleaners and insisted that he come down to the store at that moment to compenstate me. He asked if he could call me back and I told him that he better meet me at 7:00 pm because I have better things to do than wait for him to call! Of course he agrees and 2 hours later he calls me and says that he now has to go with a friend to eat dinner. Frustrated, I reschedule for to meet him the next morning.

At 8:10 am (he was 10 minutes late), he meets me and tells me that the cleaner's insurance policy says that they pay 10x's the cost of the cleaning for lost items. For the record, that would be Y40 (aka $6.00 USD) for my $60 jeans. Before I could throw a fit, he said that that would be unfair. Then I explained to him that I was out 300 rmb from my jeans (I depreciated my jeans over 4 years) AND the Y230 I spent on a new pair AND I had to call him multiple times AND I came back to Dali. So he asked if I thought Y300 was reasonable... and I think it was/is. I could have argued for more, but I quickly agreed since I wanted to be on my merry way. I felt I was compensated enough to restrain me from taking pictures of their store and posting bad reviews all over the internet in English and Chinese. 😊 Yes, I am vindictive at the moment. Anyway, I thought the outcome was a lot better than I anticipated. I was going to be pretty impressed if I even got Y150.

If anyone's interested: Fuli Laundry Center, there are three locations in Old Dali (Yuer Rd, Boai Rd, Renmin Rd). At your own risk!
