After the rainy Xi'an , I headed West toward Urumqi, capital of the Xinjiang Province and home of the Uighur minority. As I foze my butt off in Tian Chi lake in the Tian Shan Mountain range, as soon as I could I left toward the much warmer and sunnier Turpan. I have seen some pretty awesome desert village ruins from the 4th and 7th centuries and some 1200 years old mummies pretty well preserved thanks to the arid dry climate. I have visited a karez, which is tunnel system destinated to carry water from the mountains to the dry deserted areas, in this case it runs from Tian Shan and is more than a 5000km long system... ( pretty cool eh?) I have seen the famous Flaming Mountains where the traveling monk and his monkey ( in Journey to the West) passed by in his way to India, and I have tried some Uighur food. I have no idea what it was, so if any of you recognize the dish please let me know....After visiting the Emin Minaret and got warmed up by the sun I headed toward Jiayuguan In Gansu Province, to check out the famous Fort and stroll
along the Great Wall.It was raining in Jiayuguan, so after the fort I headed south to the oasis town of Dunhuang. The main reason of my visit was to check out Mogao Caves famous of the 800 Buddhist caves 400 of which are in great condition housing sculptures and paintings from the 4th century and on. The caves were ok. the entrance fee was pricey and I could only visit 8 caves accompanied by a guide. no pictures, no bags, no dreaming no wondering around... ( the guide told us that we are very lucky 'cause they are making a reproduction of the caves and in 3-5 years the tourists are only gonna be able to see the replicas. I just wonder who is gonna come to Dunhuang for a couple of replicas, when you can see the originals in The Met, in the Louvre, and in numerous internationally famous museums. Well you cannot fight the famous chinese logic now can you??? ) The surroundings of Dunhuang is amazingtho. I fell in love with this tiny oasis in the middle of hauntingly beautiful sand dunes. You have to forgive me for the gazilion of pics I made this time, but
I just could not stop. I woke up early in the morning and the light was just perfect, and the shades were changing over the dunes just like if the desert would want to show off... It was trully magical. I hope that you will enjoy the pictures.
A Dunhuangot körülvevő sivatag azonban mindenért kárpótolt.
