The HOG group I belong to, Central Midwest of Kansas, has a fun relationship with the Greater KC Corvette Club. The Corvette club participates in some of our rides and they invite us to share some events with them. Last year we did a joint ride that lasted most of the day and was really a lot of fun. We started with brunch at the home of a member of the Corvette club and then went to a company that does the restoration of older cars, you know the certified and expensive restoration, where we were taught a little about the history of the Corvette. The group was really easy to get to know and both clubs had a blast the end of the day was a shared meal at a tavern about 60 miles from where we started. The Corvette club held a bike show and trophies were awarded as we ate. It was a great time and our club had looked forward to another joint activity. Well this year they come again to invite us to the Nite Magic Fireworks show, the 7th Annual Salute To Our Countries Veterans. One member of the Corvette club holds this free fireworks
At the Speedway
This is at Lakeside Speedway. We had about 30 in our group. program as a thank-you. The show is by invite only and our club was invited.
The American Legion Riders were also invited. They were going to ride the bike out so I was going with them. Many in the HOG group were driving cars, as an invitation was good for everyone in the same vehicle. A motorcycle would take 1 invitation just as a van load of people would take 1 invitation. Also the gates open at 5PM and people were encouraged to bring out the grill and make it a tailgating event. Its hard to bring the grill and goodies on a motorcycle. But I was just going for the show, the bike gets 50 MPG, the Jeep gets 17.4 MPG. Both are fun to drive, but there isn’t any real competition as to which one is more fun. Its gotten so I even take the bike grocery shopping. Seriously, it works out great, forget about all those impulse buys, there is no room. Essentials and thats about all I can strap, hang or stuff on the bike. I digress from the story.
So the American Legion Riders from Post 370 were leaving at 7:00PM from Doc’s

This is a shot of the pyrotechnics (SP?) set up inside the track. Coffee House, which is commonly known among those outside our group as the McDonalds located at I-435 and 87th street in Lenexa, KS. They plan to ride in as a group. The program is at the Lakeside Speedway in Kansas City, KS. Lakeside is a dirt track. I drove down to the Coffee House and met up with the group. Rick T and his wife was there. He had joined the Post at the last meeting. I missed the meeting. The Greater KC HOG chapter asked to me speak at their meeting, that was the same night. I always enjoy talking with Rick. Rick was the only one that knew where the speedway was, so he led the group. We get to the speedway and they have reserved motorcycle parking right by the gate to the stadium, neat stuff. Everyone had to pay for parking, but it was only $5 for motorcycles. We had over an hour to wait for sun to set.
Rick had saved a section for the group and I took a seat in that area. As it got dark more of the riders showed up to take a seat. As the crowd waited they had

The show was billed as a 40 minute Finale show. We had been informed that the whole show would be as active as only the finale is in most shows. The Legion referred to as a Shock and Awe show. And it was. At times my chest hurt from the impacts of the explosions. I could yell and not hear myself. What an event. I have seen some great firework displays. One year my son and I were on staff at the National Boy Scout Jamboree, they had a fireworks display that was just great, everyone laid on their backs in the grass and just watched the sky light up with a spectacular display, but the one tonight dwarfed it.
Thanks Nite Magic, Dick Hardy, Mike Everhart and Scott Ruther.
