there isn't much to report about my weekend, it was mostly just there and enjoyable. i burnt myself up at the beach despite applying three or four coats of sunscreen, because i obviously cannot apply it correctly. i started to bake a cake last night except some hoodlums had turned off our gas and our landlady wasn't able to get it going again. the cake was relocated to the fridge, so hopefully i return to a fully gassy house. my roommate and i will be dining chez landlady tonight, so i am assuming we will have to fork over five euros per person for the pleasure. my pictures for this week are mostly gathered from the day-trip i took last thursday with my class level at the university's foreign institute. we saw several sights of the region, in order they were:

le cirque de navacelles, a large canyon with a little mound in the center in the basin
la couvertoirade, a medieval walled city where we ate lunch and marveled at the green grass
le viaduc de millau, a viaduct that was so-so in grandeur
AND
les caves de roquefort, in the town of roquefort, with all the cheese in the world growing and molding inside miles and miles of caves.

the highlight for me was of course the cheese, because i have developed a nearly heart-breaking love of roquefort during my time here. we visited the société caves, and knowing that there was some of their very own cheese waiting in my own little cave (fridge?) back in montpellier, i was tempted to buy all that was in sight. they had three flavors of cheese, flavored by the different green fungi from the different caves. the first type the 1863, which is the most widely sold and what i have bought. another type was stronger than the 1863, according to others, but to me it was only all the more delicious. the third kind, which according to a friend tasted like ham (and i agree), was creamier, and not as great as i was hoping for.

the other places we visited were nice as well, and it was a good substitute to class, of course. i actually only have a total of five more days of class left, since tomorrow (may 1st) and next tuesday are both holidays here. if i get it in gear, i may travel this coming weekend. we will see!
