Well someones gotta do it right!!?!?! 2 scots 2 swedes 3 norwegian and 2 austrians. Its kinda what every guy replies to when asked what would he bring to a desert island. Well ive lived that fantasy now and let me tell you it doesnt go as it was planned in my head!
So i land at Hervey bay for a 3 day trip to Frazer Island, the biggest sand island in the world they tell us. The evening before i was to leave we had a group meeting which i was 30mins late for. So when i walked into the room and saw 9 chicks staring at me.....well ill let you decide what i was thinking but youre probably right. There was a grin from ear to ear on the inside. But this fantasy soon began to dissolve shortly after when we had to go shopping for $200 dollars worth of food for the next 3 days. Now when i got shopping for food its bang bang bang all the items on the list checked and out the door in minimum time. Ha try doing THAT with 9 girls! No chance! The bitching and arguments were already starting on
The gang
what we should eat even before we left the mainland!! 90 minutes later and i was delighted to get home.
Up early the next day and got a briefing on driving the beaches of Fazer in the 4 wheel drive........i had a funny idea that the man would be doing most of the driving so i listened well. The sand is very deep in places and people get stuck all the time. There were also recent cases of people flipping their jeeps on the beaches killing people so i was a bit nervous being responsible for 9 people when we first landed on the island and the jeep was sliding everywhere, but i soon got the hang of it and we were off enjoying the island. On the first day we visited a really cool crystal clear fresh water lake in the middle of the island. It was great swimming in it and the water was drinkable actually tasted great. Thats when i also had to stop the first argument between the scottish girls, who were big girls who liked getting stuck in and help out with the work and the little dainty sun tanning swedish girls
who didnt
showing them how to do it
like doing anything except trying to look pretty. There were to be a few more comments between these 2 groups before the trip was over too! We visitied a shipwreck at one stage which was cool but the funny thing was that the sand flies which have a nasty bite were chasing the girls all over the beach....it was fecking hillarious watching them all running around screaming!!That night we stayed at an aboriginal camp where 2 very nice aboriginals performed some dances for us and told us some stories. We were also visited by 2 wild dingos which were everywhere on the island. It was great to see such a beautiful animal so close. At various stages of the evening i had to walk the girls back to their beds (which were outdoors) coz of snakes and dingos and lots of other stuff that could massacre them all.....what a hero eh!
On the 2nd day the driving was more difficult as the tide was high on the beach forcing us onto more difficult sands. It took alot of concentration doing the driving and i was knackered every night. We had kind
of an unsaid agreement that id do the
Dingo
mans stuff like driving and the girls would do the dinners and cleaning, i was happy with that. We visited another nice lake which was great to reach because we had to trek across 1km of dessert to get to it and it was feckin hot!!! That night was a bit crazy. Everyone (the girls i mean)was a bit on edge coz a girl got bit by a snake at our camp the night before.....luckily the only non venomous snake on the island(all the others were in the top 10 most venomous snakes in the world!!! We played drinking games and the bitching dropped and the craic was good. We headed down to the beach where one of the austrian girls got waaaaay too drunk and headed off on her own. When going to bed we had no idea where she was and she didnt reply to our calls. We couldnt go into the bush because it was very dark and we didnt fancy a dingo chase or snake bites either. She turned up early the next day at dawn when it got bright and told us she spent the whole
night hiding in the bush lost waiting for day
Getting ready to head off
light........i had to have a good snigger at that but it was quite serious and dangerous what she did!
On the 3rd day it was a quiet rise with a few sore heads and we all headed back to the boat from the trip back to the mainland. I really enjoyed Frazer much more than the whitsundays but it always depends on the crowd you go with. We didnt get stuck once in the sand either thanks to some great driving (ahem :o) ) when many others had to get on their knees and dig ha!
