Me and Zannah - and barbecued sprouts!!!!
Melbourne Sunday 24th December 2006 to Monday 1st January 2007

Festivities started on Christmas Eve with a few glasses of bubbly and a night out at the Evelyn to see Martin Martini and the Bone Orchestra - what a great start! The band is crazy and the support act was brill - with violin, trombone, saxaphone and cello (I think or is it a double bass!??!) and even a christmas carol or two song in the unusual and unlikely style of Martin Martini! Christmas Eve being a big celebrations for Germans and as half the hostel (The Nunnery) turned up it was a fab night and into the early hours!

Christmas Day and Father Christmas had arrived! All the way from England! - He hadn't forgotten me!!! :-) I'd brought a minature tree and some tinsel to brighten up my room and to make it seem a little more christmassy and I had pressies under the tree whcih mum and dad had brought over from everyone. Sooo christmas morning and I opened my stocking and found the usual suspects!!! - toothbrush, cracker, chocolate money!! - no satsuma but I don't think that would've got through customs!! Then it was time for the Bucks Fizz! You can't obviously get the M$S stuff over here so I did a DIY with fresh orange juice! By 11 o'clock and two glasses later I think I was a bit tipsy! Just as well as I spoke to mum, dad and Johanna all a bit tiddled after their nights out in Reading! It made for a funny Christmas chat!! Onwards then to Elwood (south of St. Kilda) and to Zannah and Colins for dinner...

Now you may be thinking, as was I, Christmas in Australia - great: sunshine, beach, hot weather! No. How about the coldest Chrsitmas Day by 11 degrees on record, dark, grey, rain and HAIL!!!! Yes I had to pinch myself that I really was in Australia and not back home!! So on with the layers and on the 96 tram down Elwood...

Christmas dinner was yum and had a very anglo-aussie feel! - Veggies on skewers on the bbq, roast turkey and stuffing. The piest de resistance was, however, the sprouts!! - barbecued! - bit raw but as with tradition - eaten by everyone! I was determined to eat my dinner out on the patio and managed inbetween

rain showers! The day passed with a great deal of bubbly, 'guess that tune' and even a game of cricket! (it had to be done!!). After a walk back to St. Kilda and tram up to Nicholson Street I was back at the hostel and greeted with shouts and hugs of 'Merry Christmas'! It was really great and homely! Good end to the day...

Boxing Day was the day to see England get thrashed at the cricket by Australia in the Boxing Day Test and the MCG (Melbourne Cricket Ground). I saw the whole of the England team get bowled out for 159. Then Australia came in and finished the day at 44-2 with Freddie Flintoff getting 2 wickets in 2 balls! - It was about the only real thing the Barmy Army had to cheer about - but to be fair they never stopped singing the entire match! Warne got his 700th wicket and I managed to eat 2 burgers! After the cricket it was off to see 'Happy Feet' at the cinema and the end of another great day...

I was glad I was doing something on Boxing Day because even though you have to just

a la the Nunnery! Jez, me and Sean
treat every day as 'just another day' rather that think 'oh it's Christmas Day, I would be doing this at home... ra ra ra ...' I did want to make sure I was busy. Obviously something would always be happening on Christmas Day but for me Christmas is about the two days. So I was really happy to be doing something not just to fill the time but to do something special at that.

New Years Eve started very cilivised with G&T's on the balcony! It ended not so civilised with beers and sparklers on the roof of the hostel watching the fireworks and amazing views of the city! A fun way to welcome in 2007. The year I've dubbed the year of smiles! :-) x
