Iguacu Falls Panorama
The view from the Brazilian side. Post Rio we have stopped off at the Iguacu falls, which have been a real highlight of my travels. We visited both the Brazilian and Argentinean sides, and found the Argentinean side to be just amazing. They had constructed trails and walkways which allowed you to get really close to the vast amounts of water pouring over the falls. The main cascade is, (appropriately), called the "Devil´s Throat" and is suitably awe-inspiring given the name. We were standing less than 10 metres away from a massive horseshoe of thundering water.
The highlight of the day was probably when we decided to act like naughty teenagers and ignore the "do not pass" signs to go exploring and rock-hopping around some of the smaller falls. We discovered a shipwreck (artistic licence taken - read rusty rowing boat) and a really nice secluded pool at the base of one of the falls that was great for swimming in. Cue lots of silly photos of us jumping off rocks into the water and general messing about!
Before heading onto Montevideo for Chrimbo we had a stopover at the quaint, historic city of Colonia del Sacremento. I imagine that the cobbled historic quarter
must be extremely pleasant to wander around, but what I can tell you is that it is an absolute riot to hoon around on a golf cart!! Anytime you combine me and a rented vehicle it seems to be out the hooligan in me. Combine this with narrow, cobbled streets and I was in my element - just not so sure my passengers appreciated the ride quite so much when I took my turn behind the wheel!!
Christmas day was spent in Montevideo, Uruguay. We met James at the ferry port at about noon, his having completed an ill-advised 3000 odd km dash from Bolivia only 12 hours behind schedule!! The hostel we were staying at had a sun deck and we decided to cook up a massive roast dinner, just like back home. Luckily, we were the only Brits staying there and so no-one else had the same idea as us. Thus it wasn’t a problem for us to use up the hostel’s only oven and 3 of the 4 rings for the whole afternoon!!!
Montevideo also saw the first attempted mugging of the tour! Having watched the sunset down at the port, the four of us
Naughty teenagers...
We indulge in a bit of ledge jumping in our own private part of the falls wandered back to the city centre, (only about 5 or so blocks away). Despite the fact that three of the four members of our group were 6 foot and above, one of the light-fingered locals jumped out of a van and tried to wrench my wallet out of my pocket! I managed to wrench him off and we all legged it to the safety of the city centre, (Steve’s flip flops being sacrificed in the pursuit), for a well earned beer to calm the nerves.
Uruguay may not be famed for its cuisine, but Chris, James and I did some top eating down at the “Mercado del Puerto”, a market famous for its meat grills. Bars are set up around enormous BBQ grills, and you sit side-by-side on barstools around the edge watching fantastic pieces of meat being cooked up in front of you! Very nice!!

Dodgy facial hair and Chrimbo cookery
How can you post such photos without mention of the glaringly obvious attempts at "traveller rugged"? Also, I like the "fruits of OUR afternoon behind the stove". I remember Chris cooking...
