Well I have now read Nelson Mandela's the Long Walk to Freedom.. what an amazing person and book. Incredible how one man can stand up to what is wrong and do something about it when so many people walk on by.. what makes a person like that I wonder..
Anyhow it has left me quite revolutionary.. so watch out next time I see a bit of injuctice...!!
Monday 19th Feb.. lots of purple brusies after surfing yesterday..!! I booked a sweedish massage across from the AVIVA House which was excellent. Very relaxing :-) I then went to District 6 museum - the aparteid museum which was brilliant. It is full of stories from apartied, pictures and shows how rooms used to look and so on. Takes just over an hour, so is quite small but worth doing. There was a memorable story about a man who was forceably removed from his home/township, but his homing pigeons kept going back and sitting on the rubble as they didn't undertsand their owner didn't live there anymore..
Made Pimms in the evening, with English cucumber! for all the people in the house. Went to the local pool hall with Katie who was back
for one night, and that was fun. We rolled in latish so slept in the boys room - there are no boys here now!! So very handy as it stops us waking the rest of the girls up.
Tuesday was a very quiet day, and sadly didn't make it to Rotary as wasn't too well - there is a 24 hour bug going around, so I had it today, and the rest of the girls are slowly getting it this week!!!
Wednesday I was back at the orphanage, but I didn't actually go to work - there is now 6 of us on shift as new girl Eliza has started, so I relaxed to get my enegry up for the rest of the shift.
Thursday I was back on form, with bathtime, playtimes and all those other things. I tied a tie for one of the older girls in the morning before she went to school... up the bunny hole, round the bunny hole down the bunny hole.. etc!!!
Friday and 2 girls were sick, one was off doing something else so it was me Jess and Eliza all day which went well.. it was so
hot the kids were quiet. Kiketso is back from hospital and looks a bit liek that sand creature that was on a kids programme when I was little - he came out of the sand with big eyes.... Anyhow, was rolling on the floor with the kids whilst they climbed all over me!!!
Saturday I went and helped with the 5am bathtime shift.. the worse case of nappy rash I have ever seen!!! I got the careworker to dry Sange as I was worried about hurting him.. but the careworkers aren't so sentimental as me!! And he had some cream and talc.. the cream was 'babies bum cream' ie organic nappy rash cream.
A lot of the kids are sick which is really hard for us all to see.. but I guess part of life here. Helped do teethbrushing - I seem to have doen lots of that this shift, and am getting it down to a fine art... I do all the names I know then shout out the last 4 names and wait and see which kid looks up...!!! Some of the kids only have two teeth to brush!! There are twins here who are very little
and starting to walk. New boy seems to be settling in well and I'm afraid I have to keep calling him that as no-one knows his name yet!!
Sat morning was back in Obs and Aviva house - did a quick turn around and got train with a new girl Lana, who will is a medical student and will volunteer at the hospital for 4 weeks. Went to Simon's Town on Cape Peninsular for the day. After Muizenburg the train follows the coast and is beautiful - I wanted to stop everywhere!!! Changed at fish hoke and make it to ST, which is a very beautiful town. Good to walk around, and sit and have a drink overlooking the sea. A few museums some of which are free, but didn't go as wasn't really into museums after a 4:30 am start today! Long beach there is amazing, and for a summer Sat was quite quiet!! Direct train back to Obs then me, Jess and Eliza went to Artscape to see the Cape Town City Ballet in After the Rain.. it was amazing!!!!! Mostly modern dance not ballet though , as it was a modern piece, music by Freshly Ground
the biggest SA music group here. I loved all of it, we were in the second row of the stalls right at the front for less than 8 pounds, about 900 seater, the story was of a young man and his jorney through life, very very colourful costumes and scenery, teenagers and kids also danced a lot on stage and were fantatsic. Standing ovation at the end!! One of my best nights in Cape Town!! After we went to Long Street and Mama Africa, there was a live band there, so a great night in all!!
Sunday - Today I'm off to Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens in a bit to see African Jazz and have a look around!!
This time next week I'll be in Jo berg!!!
Love Mich
