From the summit lookout
Mt Coot-tha is about a 30 minute bus drive from Brisbane centre (well it would probably take longer, but some of the bus drivers take you on a bit of a white knuckle ride for free!). The bus dropped us off at the viewpoint, where there is also The Summit restaurant. The views from here across Brisbane are superb - the photo doesn't do it justice.

We decided to do a walk from here to the J C Slaughter Falls. Bearing in mind the walk took about 40 mins in the heat of the day and we had to pass a number of large spiders, you can imagine our disappointment when we found that there was not even a trickle at the waterfall!! It was bone dry (obviously the deludes of rain that we had experienced further north had not reached Brisbane). However, we did see one bit of aboriginal art (was expecting more when it said that it was a special walking track to look at the art!!!!). However, I did have my suspicions that this 'art' wasn't wholly original (photo attached, make your own judgement!).

So after our disappointment we started the long, hot, uphill bushwalk back, only to see ahead of us a 80cm lizard on the path. It was huge (hope you can spot it on the photo). They are pretty quick for their size and by the time we reached it, it had gone into the undergrowth. We also saw plenty of birds, including a Kukaburra, so the walk wasn't a complete waste of time!

We then missed our bus (the timetable seemed a bit slap dash), so had to walk down the hill to the other Botanic Gardens. This meant we didn't get long to walk round them, as everything seems to close early in Australia. This was a shame, as they looked really interesting and were free. The Planetarium, which is also on the same site as the Brisbane Botanic Gardens, was closed this day.

Hot work...it was another 31+ degree day and the wax in Jason's hair had melted, forcing the hat.

The biggest we'd seen in the wild at about 80cm long.
