Bay of Beagle
Gordo...not wanting to move on in Parque Nacionale Tierra del Fuego El Calafate. Probably the most expensive place we will be the whole trip. And probably the coolest glacier (do i mean cold) in the whole wide world. We have managed to get a cute little two bedroom house at Los Pinos for 40 usd a night equipped with a well-stocked kitchen, too comfortable beds and a laundromat around the corner. Our first day here, after a big homemade breakfast, we got hooked on the idea of buying a car, even leaving a note on the windshield of this bright yellow miniature 1970s mail-like truck. All of this curiosity and asking everybody we meet if they know anybody selling a car led us to test driving a 1995, rojo Fiat Duna. At 10 pm last night, the sun just thinking about setting, we meet the guy and his muy bueno auto outside the best bakery in town and give it a test drive only to decide perhaps it would not be worth the three thousand dollars he wanted to risk our lives in such a rickety contraption... rental cars here we come!
Today, Dec. 17th, was glacier day. Gordo has been wanting to see some ice and he got his wish,
times 10. We were those people herded around in a little tour bus with a guide but none of these words can do the Perito Merino glacier justice. So, in other words, see pictures, which themselves will fail in the sheer magnitude of the thing. It was like the Grand Canyon except the opposite of concepts, filling up canyons instead.
Tomorrow, heading out to Peurto Natales, en route to Torres del Paine for a four day hike.
If you want good info that we dont really know off the top of our heads check this out...its cool
