Bridge over the river
The water was so still with not even a ripple to disturb the peacefull reflection ...in a gigantic hostel dorm room with a high vaulted ceiling - probably about 30 feet at least. So a quick update: after posting, I didn't know what to do so I sat in the kitchen/tv room with about 20 other people and started watching a pretty poor movie. I don't know the name of the movie but i wasn't very interested. Then, a guy came up to me and said, "you're the seattle girl, right?" Apparently he heard me introduce myself to the Brazilian in the bunk under me. "Yeah, I'm from Seattle. My name is Myia, yours?" He introduced himself as Louis and he said he was from Argentina. Then he said "hey, I'm going to take some night shots of the city, wanna join?" Of course I did - I'd much rather explore the city than stay in the hostel
Don't get me wrong, the hostel is amazing and I'd reccommend it to anyone. The inside has painted walls of Mary and other religious themes. There are concrete statues of naked men and women everywhere and there are even places that you can write on the wall and note that you were here. It's pretty entertaining to
read. As for the keyboards, my gosh they're crazy. Fortunately, they programmed them for the English format, but the keys are not in that format. It took me the longest time to figure out how to do the 'at' email sign and then the aussie next to me said "shift plus 2...it took me a few times to figure it out" It's weird because the 'at' sign is where the quote key would be and the quote key is with the number 2. Anyhow, I'm figuring it out -the shift key is teeny tiny so thats why i'm not capitalizing everything.
Back to the night - I forgot what weather is like when you're a mediterranean country! The wind, unlike Holland's is warm and gentle - quite the contrast to the whipping icicle wind i'm used to. Louis and I walked to the river - I'll mention the names in my next blog - Louis said he'd give me his map since he's leaving Florence today. The river has this amazing bridge over it with 2 archs. At night, lights shine onto the bridge and the light's colors change fluidly from fuchia-red-orange-gold-emerald green-purple-and then a combo of purples and
Hostel Archi Rossi
It's named the best hostel in all of Italy, and it definitely deserves that title. fushias. I took so many pictures and hopefully can upload them today. The river's water was like glass so you could see the reflection of the bridge perfectly, ripple-free.
I also saw the Duomo for the first time and it seriously took my breath away. Made out of multi-colored smooth marble, the Duomo made my chin drop and I swear I didn't blink for a minute, trying to soak in it's amazing beauty. At night, it looks 2-D - almost like a painting. Then you walk up to it and can feel the cool marble and follow your finger over the grooves that a person created hundreds of years ago. It's pretty much impossible to describe.
Anyway, I'm off to get my free breakfast and meet the aussies. Just one more cool thing - when I was at the train station before I got to the hostel, a white van pulled up and out came about 10 nuns! They were so cute and dressed up in their charcoal grey attire. So adorable, and I know it's a different country, but I immediately thought of the Sound of Music.
I'm anxious to see what awaits me today.
My first Italian dinner
Panini with mozarella, tomato, basil, pesto. With a celebratory glass of white vino Love,
