Professor of Archaeology... Been dreaming of that since I was 5 and saw Indiana Jones kicking butt. Then I got more realistic about it when I was older and started to really get a feel for history and culture. Most people think it's boring but I could study over it all day. Reply to this

My dream job would be no job! Instead, I would love to have enough money and time to travel all over the place. Right now, I am a teacher, which I love....but that is mostly not a job to me, it's my life. All I ever think about is my kids (students) and how I can make their day more joyous and exciting. I LOVE GOING TO WORK!! BUT I would still rather not have to work at all :) Reply to this

I think the best way to find and have a career with your true dream job, is to think about what you enjoy doing most on a daily basis, and then get a job that incorporates those activities. Because I love working with people, negotiating, and helping people my job is perfect for me. There are quite a few people who think because I am on call most of the time this is terrible, and that because I work 7 days a week most weeks that again this is terrible. I on the other hand dont mind because it doesnt feel like work to me because I very much enjoy what I do. In my former career this was not at all the case. So, I do think it is very attainable to have a dream job. Just make a list of jobs that you could do that would incorporate activities you already love to do on a daily basis.

I'd have to say I'm working my dream job at the moment. I'm a video editor working on a variety of different types of productions, but the most interesting is editing a TV show which is screened nationally in Australia focussed on caravanning and camping. It's great fun putting the show together and seeing what's coming up, the worst thing though is that I'm stuck in my dark edit suite while to crew go off to all corners of Australia filming it all.

But next year we head off to the UK and it would be perfect to find another job editing a similar show over there but instead of only being stuck behind the computer, I'll also be out on location in all corners of the world. Reply to this

Me, I'm working on being good enough to get a translating/interpreting qualification, ideally an MA (tough to get into). Then in between gigs, I could do online translating jobs........from anywhere :-) Reply to this

Great topic!

Like Ali, I always thought I'd stumble across the perfect career whilst on the road. It hasn't happened yet. I'm still looking!

A very wise man once told me that every traveller will either one day write a book or open a hostel. I've given it some thought and I'm leaning towards the book idea- but struggling with the idea of selling my soul. After all, aren't the best stories always the ones best left off travelblog??!!

Oh this is a great idea Ali!

So, actually... I have my dream job, but I am currently looking for someone, preferrably in the west coast of Ireland, to switch places with me. I am an Art teacher in Upstate New York (Rochester... up near the boarder) and I do I do I do have the the perfect job. I would love for someone to experience it for a year and to switch with me so I can experience teaching somewhere else!

If you know anyone who might fit the bill, send them my way all!

Hi Jess, don't suppose your school has a sister school in Ireland (or elsewhere in the UK)? Perhaps ask around your school/advertise in a staff newsletter if there is one, for information from people who may have already done an exchange somewhere. Good luck finding something. Reply to this

Total dream job with the assumption I'd be good at it and make a living??? I'm like Lauterbrunnen above, archaelogy or something in history. I thought about going into it in college but chickened out because I was so broke and worried I wouldn't be able to make a living at it. Got into civil rights work, which I love, but so enjoy history and other cultures. After working in civil rights for a decade, the idea of working at the United Nations also seems like dream job. Photography would also be cool but I think if I did it for a living I wouldn't enjoy it as much. Reply to this

I dont work at the moment. Appart from looking after my daughter. We all live on my boyfriends income.
My dream job would depend on how much money I need. If it is like right now that I dont need a job but can get one if I want I would like something flexible that I can do or not do. A friend of mine recently travelled from India to Germany overland. While she was in India she and some Indians she hired made 1000 pairs of slippers. She shipped them to Germany and sold them at a Christmas market here in Munich when she arrived. That would be the sort of thing I would consider doing. Hard work but it has a beginning and an end to it and doing it again is optional.

I met a few people who are into importing and exporting while I was travelling. They buy things while travelling and then sell them in their shops or on a market stall when they get home. It is certainly a job I am going to keep in mind as an option. One guy I met has a small shop in Canada which earns a living for him. He was showing me the types of things he buys. One of which was 50 pairs of silver earings from a market in Bangkok. He says things like that are easy to smuggle back to Canada in his backpack. He said they are really subject to tax when he takes them to Canada but he just smuggles them in.
