Emma, thanks for being so enthusiastic abt it. Yes, i agree Singapore has got many beautiful sights on just a little island. 😊 I stay only across a bridge from singapore and i do go over sometimes.
For Daphne, there are many things to do in Malaysia. if you are interested in the beach, i'd recommend you east Malaysia actually, not the peninsular where kuala lumpur (KL) is, but where brunei is.
The islands and beaches in kota kinabalu, sabah are wonderful. There are domestic flights to take from KL to Sabah. You could spend about 5 days in kota kinabalu, at the beaches as well as visit our mount kinabalu.
For the shopping, it would definitely be in Kuala Lumpur itself. If you'd like to see more local sights, you can take a coach to other small towns like Ipoh, or Melaka and visit the sights there. Ipoh is a really small town. If you don't want to be in a 3 star hotel, don't go there. But the local food is well known in Ipoh.
Melaka has turned very "tourisy". It's convenient to walk around Jonker Street n see the various trinket shops and food places. Melaka is well known - even to the locals - for the chicken rice ball and chendol.
Penang is another place that has beaches. The beaches are not as nice as those in Sabah. But penang is quite different from many other cities in Malaysia. With many colonial buildings still standing and in use. Penang is more a historical place.
Hence.... conclusion.... try out East Malaysia, then spend a few more days in Kuala Lumpur... Visit our Jalan Petaling in the evenings where we have a whole road closed for stalls. Be careful though, the prices quoted are usually double of what you can haggle for.
Other shopping complexes in the outskirts are pretty nice to go to too. Some are: The Curve, 1 Utama, Sunway Pyramid.
I may not be able to personally show you around, but feel free to contact me if you need to find out more.
Cheers...
Charlotte
