| When those of us who come from expensive countries splash out in less expensive countries we generally get much better value for money than we do in our own countries. What travelling treats have u scored that would have been expensive in your own country but a bargain in another? | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

For just 20 Euros I got a beautiful room in a picturesque hotel with a view to look out at the quaint Chinese street below. It was the first warm room I had in China. It had a TV, bathroom with a bath and all those things that good hotels here in Europe supply like shampoo, towels.... It had a big double bed with clean sheets and pretty covers. It had tea and coffee. It was so nice that I did not go out at all that evening. Just soaked in the bath and sat at the window drinking tea. :) It was especially good after the 5 hour journey I had just had squashed into an old bus where the only place to sit was under a leak in the ceiling and it rained for the entire journey. Such a change from the cold rooms I had stayed in since I arrived in China where the hotel staff constantly barged into my room while I was sleeping to wheel in metal thermass of water and ask me questions in Chinese from 5AM every morning. These budget rooms had damp carpets and smelled of cooking from the previous guests(the Chinese often cook in their hotel rooms) and cold showers that came on for 2 hours every afternoon and did not work at any other time. :D Mel [Edited: 08:37 - Mell ] Mathematics Michael Docherty Post Count: 2 Msg: #2 92 weeks ago, March 12th 2008 | well in britain i was looking for a £8 million painting and got it from a poor country for £2 million | Katm1987 Katherine Post Count: 129 Msg: #3 90 weeks ago, March 30th 2008 | Mine would generally be jewellery!! I went on a shopping spree in McLeod Ganj in India and got a ridiculous amount for the equivalent of £50. Equally in the markets in Lima, Peru I went a little over the top but the great thing to justify spending is to think what it could buy you back home - when a ring or pair of earrings in Peru = a few coffees in England it seems so worth it!!!! | AnnaAdventuring Anna Louise Post Count: 117 Msg: #4 89 weeks ago, March 31st 2008 | In India I bought a beautiful hand embroidered wall hanging for the equivalent of about £12. Shortly after retuning to England I saw a similar wall hanging on sale for £80! I realise they had to add the cost of shipping but it's still a rather big leap in price! | I also had to restrain myself buying books in the USA - they're nearly all half the price they are in the UK!! They did three separate fittings, one of which was at my hotel because they offered to come to me, and I think the total came to like $80 or something ridiculously inexpensive for the quality of the suit and the fact that I literally got to design it myself from scratch! | Jazz and Tisha Jarrad and Letitia Post Count: 14 Msg: #6 89 weeks ago, April 1st 2008 | I purchased a LOT of stuff on our trip through SE Asia in 2006, but the best finds were: | Nikkor 50mm F1.8 Lens - Kuala Lumpur Price $160.00 - Home Price $350.00 Nokia Phone - Kuala Lumpur Price $180.00 - Home Price $400.00 There was also a ridiculous amount of priated DVDs and imitation brand-name clothing that came home with us. I must have been there for an hour and a half and it cost about £15. This could have cost around £80 at home. | Katm1987 Katherine Post Count: 129 Msg: #8 89 weeks ago, April 2nd 2008 | I would have to add a half hour massage for $6 and a manicure/pedicure for $3 each in Vilcabamba, Ecuador! | dl bali debbie lane Post Count: 2 Msg: #9 83 weeks ago, May 17th 2008 | Water feature 1200mm high bought in Bali for $85 Aud takes 3 men to lift it here i would of paid about $800 | also 1mtre high lombok pot latern with bowl on top $39 here about $500 what tresures you can get in Asia.
