TRAVELSAPIEN RGT Post Count: 22 Msg: #1 4 years ago, August 5th 2005 | TRAVELSAPIEN finds when talking travel to lots of educated travelers some are not familiar with the fabulous Canadian West Gulf Islands. Many know the San Juan Islands etc but Canada's Saltspring Island, Thetes, Island, Hornby Island, Galiano Island, Gabriola Island and on and on and on. During all seasons they shine but during the summer months they are stellar. These Gulf Islands have fabulous guest houses, outdoor ocean adventures, all be it in the Juan De Fuca and Georgia Straight waters. Could some travelers post some pictures or give their thoughts? Supaaa Thanks | Alisa Alisa Greenwood Post Count: 2 Msg: #2 3 years ago, January 9th 2006 | I lived on Canada's West Coast for 2 years... affectionately refered to as the "Wet Coast". It rains alot, but if you can handle being a drowned rat for 4 months of the year, the climate is fantastic almost all year round. (High of 20 degrees, Low of -1). Trust me, for Canada that is GrEaT! | My favorite island of them all is Salt Springs; it's the biggest and has a fantastic market on Sundays if I remember properly. Great food and art work by local artisans. If you can, find the guy that makes the soft goat cheese and try the garlic one. Mmmmmm... That said, some of the smaller islands are also amazing. Sandy beaches that are super remote and you can walk on for hours. Some of them you need access to a small boat or kayak to get onto, but if you're determined, you will find a way. If you get the chance to sail through them (met up with some hitchikers who also had a boat) - definitely DO!!! There are ferries that travel year round to almost all of the islands you mentioned... Hornby, Galiano, Gabriola etc... but their schedules are pretty infrequent, so make sure you research them in advance. BC Ferries Website will have info. www.bcferries.com Also, if you're going to be in that part of the world, a great place not to be missed is Vancouver Island. Home to The Pacific Rim National Park and Rathtrevor Beach, you can see both beaches in one day and it's really enough time to do it. Take the ferry from North Vancouver to Nanaimo and then drive up to Rathtrevor. It's one of the most amazing places I've ever seen, and you can watch the tide comes in over a 500m sandy beach in about 30 minutes. It's crazy. Then, drive through Cathedral Grove to the oldest old-growth forest in Canada (800 yrs) and on to Pacific Rim National Park. It has some of the BEST surfing in Canada (second only to Jordan River just past Sooke). Anyways, I rant... I hope I've given you some ideas. MSG me if you have any other questions about Canada's "wet" coast. Alisa Number of Users: 2 | Number of Posts: 2 | ||||||||||
