I am travelling by myself and I was wondering if anyone has been before and has any hits/tips/recommendations?? | Thanks very much! “The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only a page.” - St. Augustine AlecP Alec Pattinson Post Count: 2 Msg: #2 99 weeks ago, January 30th 2008 | Hi, you will have an amazing time! Though just a word of warning, I met a couple of girls while I was on the island and they had been mugged because they had decided to take a walk along the beach near stone town at night. It's easy to get lazy and stop taking precautions etc, especially after being in country for a while, but I would never recommend doing what they did! | On a lighter note, I had no problems at all, and loved the place, if you get a chance to go across to the east coast and Vist Paje and Bweju (can't remember the exact spellings!) but its was deserted over there, and absolutey picture card perfect! All the best! Alec katiem Katie May Post Count: 3 Msg: #3 99 weeks ago, January 30th 2008 | Hi Alec, | Thank you for the advice! Paje and Bweju sounds lovely - going to be on the island for a while so making a list of planned destinations! Don't go up north, you will be treted like a mass market tourist, head to the unspoilt south. take the bus to Iringa and have a break there. Stay at the riverside campsite out of town or bankers academy guest house in town for a cheap but comfortable and clean place. visit neemacrafts (www.neemacrafts.com) come and help on our physiotherapy programme for a bit, we'd love to have you. Going to Znz is an amazing place for an elective- but do not forget to travel to mainland TZ after- it really is a completely different and worthwhile experience! I've been to TZ twice now and have travelled through most of it, so if you do want any advice I'd be really happy to offer it :) | my email address: <snip> Alec [Edited: 11:18 - Mell - Please exchange email addresses via the private messaging system. ] katiem Katie May Post Count: 3 Msg: #7 53 weeks ago, December 15th 2008 | Hi smoot, | Like Alec said - Zanzibar really is an amazing place to do an elective. I had the best time ever and learnt so much while being in complete paradise! I organised it myself not through an agency. Is it a health sciences or medical elective you are doing? I think there is a physio agency that works with Mmazi Mmoja hospital and there were also quite a few medics out there too. Just let me know if I can be any help - and if you need any tips on where to go. I'm so jealous - I wish I was going back out there in April! You will have an amazing time. I'm a medical student from Australia desperate to organise a placement in Zanzibar. I've sent off a few letters, and emailed many people but have still not heard a reply. I was wondering how you organised your placement? Do you have any contacts I could use? I would love the chance to visit - it sounds absolutely beautiful. Thanks!!
