Cameras - AA batteries or camera supplied?

If I'm staying in hostels can I charge my camera battery up or should I go for a camera that takes AA batteries so I can buy lots of disposables?

Hello, I'm new to this travelling lark and will be leaving home for 3 months around NZ and OZ staying in hostels most the time. I currently have a great digi cam but it only holds it's charge for a few days and I'm worried I won't be able to charge it up. Does anyone have any suggestions to help me decide whether to get myself a new one that takes disposable batteries or stick with the one I have?!

thanks :) Reply to this

If you have a new camera (from the last 3 years) it probably has Lion batteries - looking like the batteries found in your mobile/cell phone - they store much more power than AA batteries can ever hold.

So my advice is:

Get a spare battery for your existing camera - from Amazon or Ebay or a store. Make sure you have a charger that is external to your camera.

You'll be able to charge your camera in most if not all hostels/hotels - and if you have two batteries - and charge up as soon as one goes flat, you'll never miss out on a shot.

Hope that helps! Reply to this

Hi Loose85, im following the same route as Ali, i deiced i couldn't be bothered lugging around AA battery's and a charger and i did not want to add to environmental damage by buying and throwing away disposable AA's and so i decided to get a camera with lion battery and i got the shop to do me a deal for a spare battery and a memory card when i bought the camera. Most Lion batterys take little time to recharge and most can be charged even if only half full.

Hope this helps
