Fresh for Thailand

hi! im planning to go to thailand on the 1st of dec and will be staying for 10days. im 20 and going to be traveling alone. im looking for a cheap place to stay, maybe around Khao San Road. i also want to check out their beaches maybe in Phi Phi Island. how do i get there from bangkok?

and about traveling to cambodia. i might want to do this by train (i heard its safer than going with the traveling tour) but im not sure about the visa? how do i go about this one? and where can i stay there too? is it safe? need your help guys! thanks :)
