CORRUPTED KENYA AIRWAYS
Posted: Thu October 18, 2007 03:49 PM UTC
WARNING: Stay away from Kenya Airways... They overbook their flights, and DO NOT REFUND you for any compansation whatsoever.. We booked our flight over 9 months ago with them, and upon check in, they advised us that the overbooked and we were bumped. We lost over 7000$ USD because of their irresponsible behaviour and they refuse to compensate any of it. We were stuck in the Nairobi terminal with no food, water or any telephone to call our agent for over 9 hours!!! YOu are better off flying with a reputable provider that will not ruin your holiday and will actually comply with it's reservation policies. The staff were unhelpful, rude, lying and overall, the don't deserve to be the "Pride of Africa" more the " Shame of Africa". We were two out of several people who got bumped from this flight. All of us who didn't get refunded or a simple sorry. STAY AWAY from this airline from hell!

All airlines overbook. I know that because my father works for United. It's common practice because lots of people don't show up or are too late. Anyway, this can and does happen with any airline. I've flown Kenya airlines before and it was fine. Reply to this

I love Kenya Airways
And its not legal for them to take $7,000 from you like that, unless you are lying.
You could always file a suit and you will get compensated double Reply to this

1. As was already said, all airlines overbook. I'm sure you weren't just 'bumped' from your flight. Were you not booked onto the next flight?
2. I've flown with Kenya Airways twice, and they were very helpful, helping me re-arrange a flight date for no charge although i was within the one month deadline.
3. How did you lose over $7000 if there was only two of you?
4. "We were stuck in the Nairobi terminal with no food, water or any telephone to call our agent for over 9 hours". There's plenty of food, water and communications in the Nairobi terminal. I was on a stopover there for 20 hours! Reply to this

Luke...congratulations.. it sounds as if you're quite the experienced traveler, but then again so are we. The airline did take account we had another flight booked in conjuction with our Kenya airways flight but didn't care. 7000$ is including the loss for our week long honeymoon in the Seychelles with connecting flight, and not that it was any of your concern. And finally, if you were in Nairobi in teh recent decade, you should know you have to clear security with a valid flight ticket prior to entering the terminal. Once inside prior to entering the "gate area" of the airport, there are no vending machines, no water or communications with the exceptions of Kenya airways counter. So perhaps you should keep your comments and criticism to yourself instead of attacking two honest people who are warning other fellow travelers about a corrupted airline. Reply to this

The reason why airlines overbook (mostly 5 to 10%) is because of no show passengers with flexible tickets. They can travel within the validity of their ticket without having to pay extra, so some of them don’t care if they cancel before departure or not. Consequently the airline takes off with empty seats, which means a loss of revenue.
What airlines do when they have to offload passengers is give a ‘Denied Boarding Compensation’ and a solution to get the passengers to their destination. Unfortunately your holiday package has nothing to do with your airline ticket, so they don’t have to refund. They can however compensate (mostly through discounts on your next trip with them) as ‘goodwill gesture’, but that is up to the airline to decide. You will have to write a complaint letter and submit all proofs. Send it as a registered mail. Include all your ticket stubs and invoices. Copy them, don’t send the originals. Try to explain what happened in your letter, they can investigate it. Be firm not angry. You will achieve a lot more if you are calm but sticking to your guns.
If you’re not happy with the compensation offered, I’m afraid you will have to take it to court. That’s where you will have to see if it’s really worth the hassle cause airlines know their business and apply their procedures legally.
I’m not sure about Africa, but for travelers departing to/from an EU member state, there is a regulation on Denied boarding

Sorry kqsucks for seeming to attack you. I was just trying to get the point across that I had a fine experience with Kenya Airways, even though I needed to change my flight at a late stage, a process they could have charged me for but declined to. As for the terminal, I found a few food stores where I could buy food, and lodging for the night for $30, which meant I didn't need a visa. I agree that there is a lack of good communications within the terminal though. Reply to this
