It's actually worth it to be there between Christmas & New Year. They have the famous Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race on the 25th and there are plenty of other great actions going on during this time. If you want to plan your trip, I just found a great new site at www.bepacked.com. It shows that they just opened so there is not much info yet, but their trip planner is great and sends information back to your folks at home while you're there. I land in Sydney, fly straight out to Alice Springs and do Ulura for a couple of days, then to Perth for just over a week then back to Sydney for the last few days.
