woody1 daniel rubin Post Count: 1 Msg: #1 796 days ago, October 1st 2007 | I've taken many trips to San Francisco over the years for business, visiting friends, or just to get away from the LA heat. Recently though, I discovered something that for whatever reason has always been off my radar. I was talked into a jaunt down to Fisherman's Wharf to check out the barking sea lions at Pier 39. I have to say, it was a blast! There are hundred of these massive guys, flopping around, snuggling each other and barking non-stop. After that, I checked out The Musee Mecanique at Pier 45, and stayed there for a few hours playing these old antique penny arcade games. In fact, I had no idea how many cool museums there are in Fisherman's Wharf. There's also the USS Pampanito, (a WWII Submarine memorial), There's a three-masted, steel-hulled, ship called the Balclutha, and even the Boudin Sourdough Bread Museum is down there. I didn't have time to check out the Wax Museum or Ripley's Believe it or Not Museum but...maybe next time. It's funny, I have to admit as I do more travelling I'll be a bit more inclined to explore some of the more "touristy" neighborhoods and lose some of the pre-concieved notions I tend to have going in. I tried to search the places you mentioned on MapJack and they are so cool! I hope I could visit those places one day. Fisherman’s Wharf is the perfect thing to do in San Francisco. Great restaurants, cafes, and bars…There’s street performers, cable cars, souvenir shops and some of the coolest, most unique museums I’ve ever seen. Also, the sea lions at Pier 39 alone are worth the trip. At no cost at all you could watch hundreds of them laze about on the docks barking and preening as tourists stand nearby, taking photos and just enjoying the scene. The Wharf is such a relaxing place to stroll around, eat, and take in the sights and is also an excellent base considering the proximity to the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, the Ferry Building, North Beach, the Cannery and more. |  garyrbeck garyrbeck Post Count: 30 Msg: #4 655 days ago, February 19th 2008 | I worked for 10+ years at the end of Pier 39, 2nd floor, a restaurant called Neptune's Palace. Great views include Alcatraz, Angel Island, Sausalito and the Golden Gate Bridge! The sea lions took over days after our big shaker in 1989. There are a number of "Mom & Pop" cafes along both sides of the boulevard, many of which have been in business since the 50s and 60s. And for those who enjoy people watching, Columbus Street and the rest of the North Beach area attracts large numbers of interesting characters.
