Beijing hotels
Looking for reviews of some less well-known Beijing hotels
N Posts: 3
I am looking for a decent Beijing hotel and I want a Chinese-style, preferably hutong, and I found a couple that look good but no one has written a review of these two:
Yueweizhuang Courtyard Hotel
Tianxiang Courtyard Hotel
Anyone know how good the Yueweizhuang Courtyard Hotel or Tianxiang Courtyard Hotel are? I was not having luck with the ones on the Lonely Planet website -- once listed by LP, people fill them up.
I am also looking for a good Xi'an hotel Reply to this

We stayed in the Spring Garden Guesthouse in Beijing and loved the traditional style architecture and decor. It is in a Hutong but half a block from major transportation. It has 8 guest rooms surrounding a courtyard. www.travelchinaguide.com handles reservations.
Also the Jade International Youth Hostel is nice, convienient and a little upscale from the dormitory type hostels.

Thanks for the recommendations. I ended up staying at the Yueweizhuang Courtyard Hotel which was very nice but I see the Red Lantern would have been cheaper, so it's too bad I missed Lydia's post (I had thought I had checked when I left in early Oct).
I wonder if the Yueweizhuang Courtyard Hotel might match the others prices because it was absolutely delightful! (though the rooms are small). It is new and fantastically clean, no smell of cigarettes whatsoever, and the breakfasts are wonderful. The manager goes beyond the call of duty to be helpful.
I encouraged the manager to consider making the Yueweizhuang Courtyard Hotel non-smoking while it is still new. Reply to this

It is the best season to visit Beijing in fall.
I think you should be Taiwan now. How is it? Have you learned any Chinese ^_^

Yes Beijing was wonderful in Oct though if the air pollution then is the *better* than the rest of the year then I am afraid of what it would be like to live there, which I am considering.
How did you know I was going to Taiwan, a different post or do you know me? I was in Taiwan for a week and returned to the US. Taiwan is badly underrated (or unjustly ignored): I felt I was better able to experience really getting into real Chinese culture there than on the mainland, partly because they didn't have a cultural revolution to do away with old ways, and also I didn't realize how much I would enjoy escaping all the people constantly hassling me. OK, I am biased, I learned my Chinese when I lived there for two years 20 years ago.
But I dont think I'm that biased: Taiwan is extremely tourist friendly and has an incredible number of places to see and things to do, all with wonderful food. Reply to this
