Cell phone in Ireland

Can I rent a cell phone, or buy a throw-away phone with time on it, in Ireland?

Hello everyone,

I'm going to be in Ireland, travelling by rented car, in September. We're going to do the B&B thing and a cell phone would really be handy for calling ahead, etc.

Does anyone know if it is possible to rent a cell phone by the week? / day?

Failing that, I've heard of people buying a cheap throw-away phone that has pay-by-the-minute time on it. Is that possible in Ireland? Where would I go to do that?

Thanks for any advice you can give.

Hi Peggy,

I'm not sure what the cheapest pay as you go phone is but I imagine you will pick one up in the region of €50. The main mobile phone companies in Ireland are, Vodafone, O2 and Meteor so you may be able to do some research online.

It may also be possible to just buy a SIM card and use that in your own phone. You would need to check with your own provider if that is possible.

Enjoy

I used O2 in Rathmines, Dublin and paid as you go. Be careful of using the phone before 6 PM, because it eats up those Euros like Oreos.
Get a calling card for any USA telephone business, because it would be cheaper for the USA folks to call you once they know your phone number with the area code to get in to Ireland, usually 353. Northern Ireland has a completely different phone system, and even though you will see O2 stores, they can NOT do anything to help you. Better to stop at every O2 store as you travel around Ireland and ask for help. I found the people in Tuam, north of Galway, to be most helpful on the way to Fermanagh to help me make a connection in Sevilla, Spain to book a date for Barcelona. They are also good for confirming reservations ahead, if you start your bookings on the Internet resources. Stay away from Booking.com, they charge a fee and will NOT help to get a refund if your plans change. Better to try to book directly with the hotel, but consider any money paid to be lost, if your plans change, even though you may contact the hotel by phone in advance to let them know about your change of plans.

Visit the Waterford Crystal factory, then stop in to Kirwans pub in Kilmacthomas 15 miles on your way down to Dungarvan traveling south. Tell them George (nuhart59) sent you and ask what are they going to do with the old Dr. Alfie Quinn home down the block, which is in desperate need of preservation of Ireland's 1950's history of medicine.

Tour around Cork, at the old Cobh shipping port, Bantry, Kenmare, Killarney and Dingle Bay. If you wish to see Clinton in his follow through pose in front of the Ballybunion garda station, then check out the premier golf course, too. Have a drink in the upstairs bar room and watch the waves roll in from New York City. Reply to this
