Hi there! I consider myself an expert when it comes to anything about travel in Morocco. I have been to Marrakech and now enjoying the holy city of Fez! I wish I found your post earlier so I could have encouraged you to go to Fez instead because the annual Fez sacred music festival there took place just last week. Don't worry too much, Morocco is a moderate Islamic country, so your girlfriend doesn't have wear the traditional veil. However, some folks can be conservative so the best way to avoid their strange stares is by acting decent while on the streets. Do ask more questions if you want to know more. =)

I've recently returned from a week in Morocco, where we spent three days in Marrakesh.
Depending on where you're staying - in the medina (old city) or the new city - it is very different.

We had a wonderful time in a riad in the medina for the first two days we were there. I recommend a riad because they're usually exquisite buildings with courtyards and sometimes even a pool, where we you can escape the heat and dust of the city. Otherwise the accommodation in the new city will be more modern and conventional, and therefore more likely to be air conditioned too.

As to what to see and do there, the list of sites is not very long, so don't worry I think three days will be enough. It is the atmosphere of the city itself that is the main point. We spent hours wandering happily through the souks. Visits to the ben Yousef Medersa in the medina and the Jardin Majorelle in the new city were a welcome quiet break from the hurly burly of the city.

I've written an article on the Stanfords web site about my trip which you can read at http://www.stanfords.co.uk/go/marrakesh/ if you want any more thoughts. There are also other articles on the Morocco page, and of course lists of maps and books if you need them.

Feel free to ask anything else.
Have fun. It's a great experience.

Marrakesh has really great markets, especially at night. Don't be turned off by the fact that it may seem unsafe - there are usually plenty of other tourists around, so you should be fine as long as you stick to popular areas. But the markets are all lit up at night and look fantastic.

Had a great time in Morocco and Marakesh. No particular sights to see, just the overall atmosphere. Go the the big square downtown, it is very fun and festive. Visit the markets. I agree you don't need to worry about safety. It's also a very moderate Islam country, they welcome tourists. (unusual tip, when I was buying a rug they were very interested in my cheap american sunglasses and I traded them to bring down the price. He also wanted my shirt but I didn't give that up. Bring sunglasses they can be used like cash)

Don't stay at CTM hostel unless you like bed bugs! There are plenty of cool and cheap places to stay that are right on the main square. If you like to smoke, look for a guy who's an absolute dead ringer for Frank Zappa in a jelabba outside the big French cafe! He rocks...Oh yeah, if you start getting hassle from anyone just stop, grab your girl and start kissing! We found that the merchants and beggars leave you well alone and you don't even have to tell them to piss off. Good luck...
