Cape Town to Nairobi
Travel tips for a shoestring traveler.

A friend and I will be traveling south/east Africa this summer, May11th-July 25th. We plan to move from Cape Town to Nairobi making detours along the way.
Basically, we will go from Cape Town up the garden route to Durban, to Pretoria, to Krueger, To Vic Falls via Zimbabwe, Lusaka, Malawi, Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar, Olduvai, Nairobi, Lake Turkana, Nairobi.
Having never been to Africa, I need some advice. Has anyone taken this route, or a similar one?
What was the best part? Worst part?
Best deals on travel/lodging, food, reserves etc.? Worst?
How much should I expect to spend? Keep in mind I plan on staying in the cheapest hostels, taking the cheapest transport, etc.
Will I feel rushed taking only 10 weeks?
Has anyone been to Lake Turkana or Koobi Fora? How did you get there?
Any other advice is greatly appreciated. Thank you for taking the time to read this and responding. Reply to this

Cheapest transport here are the matatus (vans). However, in the north towards L. Turkana (that means any point past Maralal) the transport is mainly cattle trucks. Hitch a ride on these, else try your luck to catch the very few buses on these routes. Reply to this

I travelled through Zim, Bots and S.A. by train and found it to be an absolutely fabulous experience! I'm planning to return, this time to travel from Cape Town to Dar es Salaam. I found a good site with info about trains in Africa: http://www.seat61.com/Zambia.htm. Hope it helps! Reply to this
