Cross-culturally Unprepared

Many postings full of sad comments indicating lack of cross-cultural awareness

I have observed quite a few sad posting from folks who seem to think that because other cultures are different from theirs that they are stupid, ridiculous and worth only of criticism. This is really depressing. These attitudes are why people go to war or brutalize others. Prepare yourselves for difference and be open-minded. It's a shame that you don't have to pass a cross-cultural sensitivity test before leaving your country. Reply to this

I think that travelling to other countries, observing, participating and making friends from those cultures is one of the ways that peoples view points are broadened and attitudes are changed... hopefully postings from the same people in several months time will be more open minded. Reply to this

I think that for someone who's never left their own country, they won't spot the ridiculous things that are evident to outsiders. Although they're perhaps closed-minded, they're taking more of a step forward to remedy that situation than those who do nothing but sit in their own homes and criticize. Reply to this

I must say that this is the reason why many Americans think that French people are rude. They come to Paris and don't make any effort at all to learn basic French terms, or rules of etiquette, and that bothers the French people. Many would be amazed to see how a little effort would go a really long way when in France. Reply to this

I find it hard to believe that these people travel from their front doorstep!! Travelling is all about experiencing something new isn't it? This includes cultures, languages and people. I have lived in the Middle East for almost 4 years now, and it is the differences in culture that makes me love where I live!! Reply to this

I think the best thing about travelling is learning to understand another culture. Obviously there are going to be things you find hard, or that you don't agree with but that's part of learning to see things from different points of view. Reply to this
