Criminal record

Hi there
We have to travel to the UK in 3 wks and unfortunately it has all been a big rush. My partner has a criminal conviction from about 13-14 yrs ago where he was sentenced to 3 mths jail for drink driving. He had been caught a few times before this. These were all in his mid twenties and he is now 41 so they are about 13-14 yrs ago. He is kiwi and these offences were committed in NZ.
Does anyone know if he is likely to be refused entry to the UK
It is our daughters wedding and we will be devastated if he cant get in.
He has had no other issues for the past 13-14 yrs and has been living in Australia for 10 yrs with no convictions for anything.
Would love some help please -its clearly too late to apply for a visa now. Reply to this

Hi Angela,

Welcome to the TravelBlog community!

If your husband is travelling on a kiwi passport, he shouldn't need a visa to visit the UK. If the offences didn't stop him entering Australia that's a good sign, but my suggestion would be to contact the local British Embassy.

Try one of these: UK Embassy in Australia Reply to this

Hi Angela

Welcome to Travelblog.

Because of the length of time the UK would probably consider the convictions as spent but as Jo advises it is a good idea to contact the British Embassy just to make sure. Happy Travels.

Thanks so much. I did email the British Embassy and got a standard response that didn't answer my questions and just said to apply for a visa to avoid any disappointment. We dont have time to apply now as left it too late with a million other things ben going on. ....so I rang them and its almost $3 a minute to talk to them so hung up.
I have read a bit about "spent" convictions and apparently 3 mths jail is considered "spent" after 5 yrs if no further trouble. I will print that off and take with me Reply to this
