one big trip... or many?
10 years ago, April 17th 2014 No: 1 Msg: #180773
I have a conundrum, do we do the big trip that will cost $20,000 or.... do 4 little trips at $2000 each??
I would love to take the kids to the US. Especially to Disneyland. but, it is a $20k trip pretty much for maybe 2-3wks for a family of 4 from Australia. if we are going to do this, we really need to before both kids hit private school which is in 3 years... then the travel fund will start to dwindle 😞
but... for the last 5 years we've been doing heaps of little SE Asia trips or Australia trips... at least4 a year. which would really need to stop for a while to pay for a big one.
And I NEED my holidays 😊 but... i am getting stifled with SE Asia.... oh what to do??? damn!!

You can book family world tour packages with various tour operators in your area. Or you can search on-line for affordable world tour packages. Reply to this

Hi Tam,

I've just found this post. You may have already made your decision.
How old are the kids?
After reading your post it sounds to me that you may have already made your decision and just don't want to say it out loud. It sounds like you are ready for something new and not SE Asia. Disney is expensive no doubt about it. But other parts of the U.S. can be reasonable depending on where you want to go. If you come to the U.S. for three weeks I assume you would not spend the entire time at Disney.

Darn, life is full of tough choices.

Are you planning Disneyland or DisneyWorld? http://www.disneytouristblog.com/disney-world-versus-disneyland/

Give me an idea of what you'd like to see while you are here and maybe we can make some suggestions that will be a bit cheaper and just as enjoyable. We might come up with ideas that would allow you to stay for 4 weeks.

Happy travel decisions. Reply to this

Hi Dave! I am keen on the US but yet to save any of those amounts of money doh!
The hubby is not keen...so I really need to find some sporting events to add to the fun. We lived in the US for a few years although minus children so I have done a bit of the touristness that is Disneyland and Disneyworld 😊 And I definitely go for Disneyworld!!!! But... I think flying from the west coast of Australia to the east coast, then over to California, will probably be enough for the kids and probably enough of our travel time used than to also go to florida. Although... aust plays cricket in the west indies in may so maybe I could instead do a cruise... that's if I win lotto lol! actually maybe that is worth investigating more as I think Qantas flies in to dallas these days.
But... my 3 yo girl is sooooo in to Disney princesses and my 6 yo boy still believes in everything so I think this is the best time. And yes, i'm sure 2 days at the most would be enough of Disneyland. So I guess to get over to florida will really be another $1000 for 4 tickets but is there a lot more to do? If we stay on the west coast we could go down to san diego and up to san fran and even going to the wine region (never been there). And I really think the US is so family friendly it is amazing so it would really be worth the extravagance of theme parks and food (which they do amazingly well) and then return when they are teenagers to instead more look at history and landscapes.
hmmmmm I better get saving 😞 Reply to this

I just typed this massive post in response and computer froze :-p

Go. Do it. If it takes you a year of no cheapy SEA get aways, then it will be worth it. While that wonder is still there, take time to make your family some magic memories. If you go absolutely mum crazy hey, sneak away for a long weekend on a cheapy bali getaway..that wont take much out of the savings. It will be worth it. Grab a cruise deal while you are in the states, seems there are heaps of them - get some time in the Caribbean in too while you are at it. Reply to this

The big long answer I typed before my computer froze did throw around the idea of HK disneyland. Just looked at the flight times and it would be a shorter leg to the states from HK. Reply to this

Hello! Not sure if you have already made your decision. If I were you I would opt for a few small trips. If your kids are wanting to go to Disney, I would wait until Shanghai Disney opens next year and do Disney there. I have been to Hong Kong and the Disneys in the USA. Hong Kong is very tiny and I would not recommend going all the way to Hong Kong just for Disney (Now if you are going to Hong Kong just because it is amazing then I would suggest doing Disney as a day trip). However, from what I have read Shanghai Disney is going to be the largest in the World plus Shanghai is an amazing city.

If you do opt for Disney in the States I would say go to DisneyWorld. There is just so much more to do there plus there is The Wizard World of Harry Potter at Universal!

Happy travels!!! Reply to this

Disneyland is the right option for you. When it comes to kids defiantly they like nothing else more then Disney and it is an amazing thing to be experienced.
Australia can also be a good option but if i was you i would have chosen US. Reply to this

In response to: Msg #180773 People usually book packages however end up with a restricted tour. I would advise to plan in advance and look for individual components to save money and get more flexibility during your holiday.
For flights I would recommend <snip>
