Hi all,

I'm looking to travel a bit of Greece at the end of May for approximately 4-6 days. I'm just looking for a bit of feedback on where to see. Im aware its very subjective what people are interested in but I'm very into the beach, natural features eg cliffs, bushland etc, as well as good authentic Greek foods so with that in mind any suggestions would be massively appreciated thanks Reply to this

I've read yesterday one tourist was very disappointed about food on greek island, I don't know why. so I've got a question I want to taste some local traditional meals but if I don;t like it can I find some ordinary "universal" food? I've got deabetes and I always have to think about food before I go somewhere

Hi, Greeks love food, but in tourist areas the food is often miserable. Greek food is also healthy, grilled fish or meat, salads, vegetables, olive oil, fruit in abundance - really good food with fresh ingredients.

If you want to experience some traditional food you should go to islands that are not so touristy. Naxos is a beautiful island, quite big, with beaches, history, archaelogy, pretty old town, idyllic villages and mountains. You can visit for a week and drive round (renting a car is recommended, but there are buses too). There are the traditional restaurants, but you can also find more international food. Naxos has tourism so you will find anything you want there, but it is quite low key and most people on the island work in agriculture or trade.

Another place with great food is Crete - away from the tourist resorts. Crete is a big island, and you can find anything you want. Cities, small villages, mountains, beaches, archaeological sites. Again car recommended. Get out into the countryside, stop at a small village, and ask if they have some food - they will most certainly show you to a littel kafenion or taverna, where they will cook simple country food. And offer you free raki and fruit from their garden. Ask for "magirefto" the cooked food, casserole style. Can be amazingly good for example fresh beans cooked in tomato and olive!

The key to finding good food is to check out where the Greeks eat, ask someone local to recommend a place or too. Greek food is so varied that I dont' think you will have a problem. Just be aware that fresh fish can be VERY expensive, so check the price before ordering. Reply to this
